When asked by a reporter on Sunday about what can be done about the chaos at the southern border, President Joe Biden had a very interesting reply.
“A lot more,” he said in response. “We’re in the process of doing it now, including making sure that we reestablish what existed before, which was they can stay in place and make their case from their home country.”
Reestablishing Trump-era border policy would be a stunning reversal to Biden’s first days in office, where some of his first priorities were to roll back the former administration’s Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), which kept immigrants attempting to cross the border illegally in camps in Mexico while awaiting hearings.
The Biden administration opted to return to the “catch and release” policy, in which illegal immigrants are allowed to enter the U.S.

The Biden Administration Was In No Way Ready To Handle A Surge At The Border
According to a Pew Research study, in April of 2020, border apprehensions numbered right around 16,000. Fast forward to February 2020, that number has exploded to 100,000 in just the month of February alone.
In a report from Fox Business, the Biden administration awarded ICE an $89.6 million contract to provide hotel rooms and processing services who have not been removed from the United States, but have been placed in immigration proceedings.

The contract, released through Texas-based Endeavors, will also provide comprehensive health assessments. This includes COVID-19 testing, victim services, therapeutic regiments, educational resources, as well as mental health care.
According to information from Customs and Border Protection (CBP), 7000 migrant families were apprehended in January, that number jumped to 19,000 in February.
5K migrants per day are crossing our borders. How many have Covid19?How many can we take in? This is a crisis.

Crisis? What Crisis?
As the situation at the southern border continues to deteriorate, no one in the Biden administration will call it a crisis. Even a report from the Washington Post criticized the administration for having been forewarned of the upcoming surge, yet still being unprepared and lacking the capacity to deal with it.
DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas will only go as far as to say that, “the Biden administration is on pace to encounter more individuals on the southwest border than we have in the last 20 years.”
Mayorkas went on to add that many of the unaccompanied minors coming across the border already have family or legal guardians in the U.S.
“In more than 80 percent of cases, the child has a family member in the United States. In more than 40 percent of cases, that family member is a parent or legal guardian. These are children being reunited with their families who will care for them,” he said.
Amid declarations from the Biden administration to be more “humane” in regard to immigration policy, they have continued a quiet and controversial Trump-era action known as Title 42. This little-heard of policy stems from a 1944 public health statute to indefinitely close the border to nonessential travel. It remains in place because of COVID. In a statement regarding the border, Secretary Mayorkas says that:
“The majority of those apprehended at the southwest border are single adults who are currently being expelled under the CDC’s authority to manage the public health crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Pursuant to that authority under Title 42 of the United States Code, single adults from Mexico and the Northern Triangle countries of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras are swiftly expelled to Mexico. “
However, according to a report from the Los Angeles Times, the Biden administration is relying heavily on Title 42.
CNN anchor Poppy Harlow says that the Biden admin knew the consequences to reversing Title 42, and that they should have been prepared for the surge of migrants at the border

Of Course Democrats Blame Trump
Democrats in every branch of government have, of course, blamed former President Trump for the chaos they now see at the border. They claim that Trump did not work with the Biden transition team, and that they “inherited a mess.”
One unnamed official claims that, “When we came into office, like, it was a disaster. I mean, really. The staffing wasn’t in place, the structures weren’t in place.”
However, former acting CBP Commissioner Mark Morgan said to CNN, that the Biden administration was “specifically warned again and again and again.” Morgan went on to say that officials even projected an increase in traffic on the southern border if Trump policies were rescinded.
If the crisis continues to worsen, Biden may end up signing some executive orders to reinstate the policies that he signed executive orders to get rid of.
