Don Lemon Calls For Electoral College To Be Abolished, Then Backtracks And Claims He Never Said It
CNN host Don Lemon is desperately trying to backtrack after he called for the Electoral College to be abolished on Monday night. The next day, Lemon claimed that he had never said this, even though he blatantly did so on camera.
Lemon Calls For Electoral College To Be Abolished.
Lemon made his remarks while talking to his fellow CNN host Chris Cuomo, who accused both Republicans and Democrats of being âhypocriticalâ in comparison to their 2016 position on Supreme Court vacancies during an election year. Thatâs when Lemon let loose, saying, âWeâre going to have to blow up the entire system.â
Lemon went on to call for the Electoral College to be abolished.
âYouâre going to have to get rid of the Electoral College, because the people â because the minority in this country decides who the judges are and they decide who the president is. Is that â is that fair?â Lemon said. âIf Democrats, if Joe Biden wins, Democrats can stack the courts and they can do that amendment and they can get it passed.â

Lemon Backtracks
The next day, however, Lemon insulted viewersâ intelligence by claiming that he never actually said this after all!

âI woke up and saw these headlines like, âDon Lemon is calling for the abolishing of the Electoral College.â But let me tell you. I donât care,â Lemon said, going on to claim that he was just responding to Cuomoâs suggestion of electing politicians with integrity.
âAnd I said, well then, we have to blow up the whole system. Right?â Lemon added. âBut I said hereâs what Democrats can do. And I said thatâs the danger. They can stack the court. But all of a sudden, I am calling for the abolishing of the Electoral College and what else do they say, and that Iâm a Democrat because I said âwe.â I mean, the American people.â
The CNN host then said that he was only responding to the criticism because the âcontext was so egregious,â accusing his critics of using an out-of-context âsound biteâ against him. Lemon claimed that he was not calling for the Electoral College to be abolished, and was instead only echoing those who were.
âBut hereâs what I say, run and tell this: I do think that we need to look at the Electoral College because I think that it disenfranchises voters, both Democrats and Republicans. If youâre in a blue state, and all of the electoral votes go to the Democratic person, then the Republicansâ votes arenât counted, the people who voted for the Republican candidate,â the host said.
âSo, I do think it should be looked at because I think it does disenfranchises certain people,â Lemon added. âShould it be abolished? Thatâs not for me to say. Iâm saying, this is what Democrats are saying. Stack the courts. Get rid of the Electoral College. But there is no nuance and no context anymore.â
