Posing for a portrait, Dorian Gray (Hurd Hatfield) talks with Lord Henry Wotton (George Sanders), who says that men should pursue their sensual longings, but laments that only the young get to do so. Taken with the idea, Dorian imagines a scenario in which the painting will age as he stays youthful. His wish comes true, and his boyish looks aid him as he indulges his every whim. But when a stunning revelation forces him to see what he’s become, Dorian faces some very dangerous questions.

Synopsis: Spoilers?
Dorian Gray (Hurd Hatfield) is a young man living in late-19th century London. While wealthy, charming, generally intelligent, and very handsome, he is naive and easily manipulated. These faults lead to his spiral into sin and, ultimately, misery.

While posing for a painting by his artist friend Basil Hallward (Lowell Gilmore), Dorian meets Basil’s friend Lord Henry Wotton (George Sanders). Wotton is enchantingly cynical and witty and tells Dorian that the only life worth living is one dedicated entirely to pleasure. After Wotton convinces Dorian that youth and beauty will bring him everything he desires, Dorian openly wishes that his portrait could age in his place and that he could keep his youthful good looks forever. He makes this statement in the presence of a certain Egyptian statue, which supposedly has the power to grant wishes. When the portrait of Dorian is complete, Lord Henry hails it as a masterpiece and is surprised when Basil announces he will never exhibit it because he feels he put “too much of himself” into it. Basil is also concerned about Lord Henry’s influence on the impressionable Dorian, who Basil considers a dear friend and an artistic muse. Basil gives the painting to Dorian, who proudly hangs it in his opulent home.

Plot: Spoilers?
London, 1886. Dorian Gray is a handsome and wealthy young man. While generally intelligent, he is naive and easily manipulated. These faults lead to his spiral into sin and ultimate misery.

While posing for a painting by his friend Basil Hallward, Gray meets Hallward’s friend Lord Henry Wotton. The cynical but witty Wotton persuades Gray the only worthwhile life is dedicated to pleasure, because “what the gods give they quickly take away.” After Wotton convinces Gray that youth and beauty will bring him everything he desires, Dorian wishes his portrait could age instead of him. He makes the wish in the presence of an Egyptian cat statue with supposed mystical powers.

Dorian visits a tavern, where he falls in love with a beautiful singer named Sibyl Vane. They begin a romance, despite disapproval from Sibyl’s brother James, and they are soon engaged. Though initially contented, Dorian is again persuaded by Lord Henry to pursue a more hedonistic lifestyle. Dorian sends Sibyl a hurtful letter, ending their relationship and “compensating” her with a large payment in cash.

The next morning, Dorian finds his own face unchanged but the portrait has changed, and “the lines of cruelty about the mouth were unmistakable.” He starts to realize his wish for the cat may be real. Lord Henry arrives with news that a heartbroken Sibyl killed herself the previous night, after receiving Dorian’s letter. Dorian is at first shocked and guilty but soon adopts Lord Henry’s indifferent manner. He surprises Hallward by going to the opera that evening.
