  • For those asking and commenting, this is directly from Shopify:

When you set up Shopify Payments, you need to enter your tax details. All businesses need to submit a tax ID. If you are a sole proprietor and don't have a tax ID, then you can submit your Social Insurance Number (SIN) or the last four digits of your Social Security Number (SSN) instead.

  • What if you live in a tax free state like for, also what if your business shipping products worldwide

  • How did you handle the sales tax for sales made prior to getting your sellers permit?

  • Thanks for all this info!! I'm thinking to start with a DBA and move to LLC once I reach enough sales per month. My question is, should I still get a EIN so I can open a business bank account to separate business from personal? Should I start the journey on shopify with only those steps or there is any other steps missing (Like getting a seller permit)? Thanks in advance!

  • Do you have to get your Sale Tax ID for each state that you sale to? I think I read something like that online but I’m not sure

  • Im trying to start a buisness on shopify and I kuve in oklahoma too

  • How do I get a sales tax id in Illinois? What website? Do I need LLC to get sales tax id? I'm braindead af so I'm lost.

  • This was so helpful! My shopify store has just been sitting there for the longest because I was just stuck on everything you just talked about.

  • I'm just scared of getting sued. For example, if I sell an electronic device from AliExpress and it blows up and kills someone or something lol.

  • Hey, first off thank you so much for this video, it was really great. So should I you know just start doing ads start getting some sales, then once I hit a big number of sales say, 100 sales, then should I start collecting taxes? And also, when I go to settings, payments, i usually go with individual/sole, that’s fine right? I’m very new to this so I just want to make sure I’m doing this right.

  • If I do end up sticking with my business and need to do all the legal stuff is there a certain order that I need to do?
Does the license come first or the ein?

  • Hi, so just to confirm. I don't need to set up my sales tax liability form for my US state if I am just starting out?

  • I don’t use Shopify instead I use wix. I don’t have to get my license right away especially when just starting out. I’m sure this works with wix too regardless of what website builder you use. Thank you so much!!

  • And how u do u do that and do you a business license as well I’m a beginner at this and I’m learning about this and I’m am interested in learning about making my own close brand business and I did created my own brand already but I connected to square to sell my merch but I still didn’t finish the square process yet because I don’t if they would ask for a business license and I didn’t if’ I should do it if I don’t have myself license for business

  • Just a 17 year old getting into e-commerce. Great quality video! Appreciate the time taken to make this very useful, easy and informative video.

I just have one more question, When you were talking about sales tax and having to pay it; I’m assuming that the sales tax only applies to official businesses and not sole trader/proprietorship run businesses as tax will be taken out of revenue as a form of personal income tax….

  • your amazing, this is exactly what I needed 🙏💙

  • I live in Texas, I pay to the comptroller monthly. There is a quarterly option but I prefer monthly for now. Shopify is amazing!

  • Hi, I am trying to start an online boutique and I reside in Oklahoma but online wholesale companies are asking for a business license or resellers permit but and I am having trouble finding the online source to do so. So far I have my EIN, OK sales tax #, cert. of LLC and I have also signed up with Shopify but now I am stuck. In order for me to buy items from wholesalers I need to provide a business license or a permit. Could you please assist me with this? TIA

  • Hello, nice video! But I have a question, if I live in the EU and do my business here, can I legally sell in the US, and where should I pay taxes? Please reply.

  • Hey, thanks for the video! What about being able to do ads on FB and IG? Don't I need to register my business to do FB ads? I am in Canada as well. Thanks man 🙂

  • Thank you so much for your service 🙏🏼👑

  • Okay so I just started a business and just wanted to make sure I’m hearing you right. I wouldn’t charge taxes or include taxes until I actually start making some money lol so don’t set up sales tax?

  • What your doing is telling people they don't need a lic or permit!!!!!!!! I advise ppl get their lic & whatever it is you to operate in your state. some ppl in the commits are having issues with cashing out etc it goes to show do everything the right way!!!!!!!!! So pretty much do everything backward Kerry E I'm lost.

  • Thank you for this video! The process of collecting taxes and paying them seems overwhelming. I have a few questions about this. If we don’t start collecting sales tax right away, wouldn’t we still have to pay these taxes later on even though they weren’t collected? Are we still responsible to pay that sales tax to the state, even though we didn’t collect it? Also, in another video that I watched on this topic, it was mentioned that we have to find out whether or not we have Nexus in a state. Not only do we need to look at where we have Nexus, but also where the dropshipper and buyer have Nexus. All of this is supposed to influence how much sales tax is collected. This seems like a very complicated process to me. I’m not really sure how to approach all aspects of it.

Also, if a Shopify store has both dropshipping and print-on-demand items in it, would the taxes collected differ with these different items?

I really want to learn about how all of this works first, so I can be more focused on the creative aspects of the store rather than getting stuck on the technical details.
