Timothée Chalamet plays Edgar Scissorhands in Super Bowl spot, internet goes gaga

After tonight, we’ll be calling Timothée Chalamet by his other name: Edgar Scissorhands. The 25-year-old actor — who wasn’t even born when Tim Burton’s beloved fantasy film opened in theaters in December 1990 — joined Edward Scissorhands star Winona Ryder for a Cadillac-themed “sequel” spot that premiered during the Super Bowl. (Watch the ad above.)

The original film featured Johnny Depp in the title role of a young man gifted — or cursed? — with scissors for hands by his creator (Vincent Price), and fell in love with Ryder’s Kim Boggs during his brief time in suburbia. Flash-forward to the present, and Edgar is carrying on the Scissorhands name with all the emo ennui and Goth fashion that entails.

And those fashions were a big part of the project’s appeal to Chalamet, who told Vogue that he worked closely with costume designer, Melissa DesRosiers, to craft Edgar’s look. “[We wanted] to create a character that could feel authentic to the austere expressionism of the original but with modern motifs,” explained the Dune star. “We also use the iconic moon crescent from Johnny’s original belt buckle costume as a sort of shoulder strap on Edgar’s costume as a small call back to the past.”

Edgar may not get to experience a father-son moment with Edward in the ad, but Chalamet credits his onscreen mom, Ryder, with bringing the spirit of the ’90s into this 21st century take. “It was a reminder of the ‘America’s Sweetheart’ role Winona occupied in many American hearts and minds in the ’90s. And she had some tidbits that were honestly creatively very helpful, although that will stay between her and me.” (Speaking of sweethearts, here’s a fun fact: Chalamet previously dated Depp’s daughter, Lily-Rose Depp.)

Twitter’s non-scissor hands were busy typing praise for Chalamet’s sharp turn as a ’90s icon. If this whole Dune franchise thing doesn’t work, maybe he can revisit the extended Scissorhands universe for a full feature film.
