Panasonic GH6 adds BRAW support and 4K120 over HDMI in new firmware

Panasonic has announced the new version 2.3 firmware for the Panasonic GH6 (buy here) Micro Four Thirds mirrorless camera. Since its initial release in February 2023, it’s seen a few updates. Last June, the company added ProRes RAW support with the Atomos Ninja V (buy here) and Ninja V+ (buy here).

Now, the new v2.3 firmware adds support for Blackmagic RAW using the Blackmagic Video Assist 12G (buy here). It also adds support for 4K UHD and C4K resolution output at 120fps over HDMI. Oddly, however, it’s not available just yet.

RAW Video Recording to Blackmagic Design external recorder

12-bit RAW video in [5.7K], [C4K], [Anamorphic (4:3) 5.8K], [Anamorphic (4:3) 4.4K] can be output to Blackmagic Design monitor/recorder ‘Blackmagic Video Assist 12G HDR’ over HDMI to be saved as Blackmagic RAW.

• Please refer to the Blackmagic Design website for the information on the corresponding firmware version of the Blackmagic Video Assist 12G HDR.
• DaVinci Resolve or DaVinci Resolve Studio is required to play back and edit Blackmagic RAW data.
• When the [Rec Quality] is set to 5.7K/60p (50p) or C4K/120p (100p) and recording to a Blackmagic Design recorder, it is recommended to set the codec quality on the recorder to the following:
  • When recording to an SSD: constant bitrate 5:1 or less
  • When recording to an SD card: constant bitrate 8:1 or less

Support for 4K 120p/100p HDMI output

Either C4K 120p/100p or 4K 120p/100p video can be output to external device over HDMI.

Panasonic seems to have followed its usual pattern of announcing a firmware update a week before actually releasing it. I’m not sure why they’ve started doing this. It’s not like they need to build up hype for pre-orders or anything.

Still, the firmware will be available to download from the Panasonic website from July 11th.
