ℹ️ About the Episode
When the Ford F-150 Lightning (an electric vehicle) was first announced, we plopped down $100 to add our names to the list. There are many reasons we would never buy the first generation models, which we’ll explain below—but performance and towing capability are not among them.
The performance of the Ford F-150 Lightning was astonishing. “WOW” was the only word that came to mind, so we needed a little help from Steve Martin just to make it clear. Our 2017 30′ Airstream Flying Cloud, with a GVWR of 8,800 pounds, made little to no difference to the truck’s abilities. If it weren’t our personal RV, it would have been interesting to see just how fast it could get to 55 mph while towing. We’re guessing fast! We were impressed with every aspect of the Ford F-150 electric truck except its range, which is no surprise. The standard battery provides just shy of a 200-mile range (100 towing) and the extended battery gets you just under a 300-mile range (200 towing). Those distances won’t provide enough travel time for typical RVers, so perhaps taking a boat to the lake or towing a cargo trailer in town are more suitable applications for this truck (for now). As we mention in the video, we personally feel that for an EV to be a viable RV tow vehicle, it would need a 300-mile range and 12-hour charge from 50 amp service at an RV park. The day Ford makes those specs a reality is the day we’ll see many electric trucks towing RVs (in our personal opinion). Of course, when the next generation of trucks is released with additional range, what will that do to the depreciation of the first generation models? Especially in the current market, where MSRP is just a starting point (if you’re lucky!). And that’s why we wouldn’t pull the trigger on the early generation models. Luckily, there are many people who won’t have a problem with the current range. They can work out the kinks for the rest of us! Also, let’s be honest. Could Trish really have a tow vehicle she couldn’t drive across the county in only two days? Probably not. But sharing the experience and reviewing this amazing truck was tons of fun and an opportunity we couldn’t pass up.

  • Pretty much like your average TV getting about half or less it's unloaded gas mileage but taking12 hours (or more) for a 'fill up' and only having a 10 gallon tank to work with.
Give 'em another 100 years to tinker with the EV's the way we have with gas engines, maybe they'll have something useful.

  • EV Not a chance!!! they will never fly..Hybrid is the way

  • To be fair, the slowest charging rates are at 80% charge and above. It’s probably slower going from 80-100 than it would be from 5% to 80%

  • It's a great status symbol though! "HEY! LOOK EVERYONE! I'M $80,000 IN DEBT FOR A STATUS SYMBOL! AREN'T I COOL?"

  • Do you have to unhook to recharge after 50 miles? does the rig fit in a charging station?

  • You mentioned you can tow long distances in a single dayeasier in a 3/4 or 1 ton. Why didn't you try to see comparatively how far you could get in a day with a lightning while towing

  • There are several factors as to the very first EV truck from Ford limitations. First, the shape of the EV. Not aerodynamic because Americans want a truck that “looks like a truck.” For contrast, Tesla’s Cybertruck looks like a stealth aircraft with excellent aerodynamics. Secondly, as Ford rushed into the EV world, the motor/drivetrain on both the Transit and F-150 is inefficient resulting, at best, into a meager and distressing 2 miles per kilowatt hour under optimal conditions. Lastly, since Americans must drive in “constant rush mode,” the 1 mile Per kilowatt rule or standard applies. Take the usable electrons available and that number is going to be the “range.” In summary, Ford managed to create an EV F-150 in its traditional underperforming custom, to be used for personal and light duty with decent range or short range as a working truck. Yes, folks, it’s the first try by Ford so give the company a chance to improve.Remember the Ford Fusion EV with 80 miles of range and the Fusion PHEV with 19 miles of range?

  • A few years ago I started asking myself before I purchased a new vehicle, "How often will you use that feature" This finally got me away from the obnoxiously large trucks with 4×4 and ability to tow a house, and stupidly fast sports cars. With EV's I will ask the same question but it will be "How often do I want to virtue signal" because as it is now, and probably another 50 years, that is the only purpose of EV's

  • You won't go far, might want to get a Honda generator to carry along and a gas can. The thing is overpriced and not very practical. I have a 21-year-old Silverado Z71 that can pull my 6000-pound trailer the 200 miles to the beach on a little over half a tank of regular go-go juice.

  • If you think a truck that can only go 100 miles with a trailer in tow is gaga wonderful…..Ford must have given you bags of bribe money.

  • Awesome Job! Just found you and subscribed! Love the down to earth "No Fluff" lack of garbage most put out. Thanx!

  • I would love to take out that stupid iPad screen with a hammer.

  • There is zero reason for the automotive industry to be going in this direction. EVs are not the savior they're cracked up to be and they're way less practical. The market is not choosing these vehicles…they're being forced down everyones throats for a fake crisis that even if it was real…these vehicles wouldn't stop it anyway. So stupid and pointless….it's just one industry (battery) using government regulation to supplant another industry (oil).

  • Pretty much a non starter when you can go 300 + miles in a gas / diesel truck and then take 5 minutes at a gas station and then immediately go another 300 + miles vs 12 hours of charging…..5 minutes…..vs 12 hours……

  • Don't think you can go far. Someone used a lightweight trailer and got awful results. Really can't understand why people get so excited of initial takeoff speed. Main concern is traveling distance and spending crazy $ to have hookup accessories. 30 Amp is too low, should have at least 40-50 amp charger. Basically it down to how much more time it takes to travel electric vs your gas type. Just to travel 150 miles you to add 10hrs plus comparing to gas. People stop the nonsense of takeoff speed. It's not relatable to normal driving.

  • Did you make it around the block before the batteries went dead with that trailer on

  • at least you have somewhere to sleep eat poo while charging

  • put solar panels on the bed cover for on-the-road recharging(?) Just an idea.

  • 50amp x 120v = 6000 watt or 6kw
    6kw x 12 hours = 72kwh

Your charging concerns don’t lie with the truck or with EVs at all, 50amp isn’t enough power to charge a truck in 12 hours. It’s like filling a pool with a garden hose, you need more flow/amps.

  • Electric trucks will not work for me. You need range and fast changing when towing horses. They cannot stay in a trailer 3 hours while the truck charges.

  • Too impractical for me! It does not have any towing range and WAY TO SLOW a charging rate. I will stick to my 2022 RAM Longhorn 6.7L Cummins Crew 4×4! I can go where I want, when I want.
    Thanks for the video.

  • Not sure if anyone has already commented but this would totally eliminate the ability to boondock or Harvest Host. It would be nice if innovation and customer demand were driving electric vehicles instead of .gov mandates.
