Hiking Iconic Saddle Rock Trail | RV America Y'all
Saddle Rock Trail at Scotts Bluff National Monument, Gering Nebraska | Hiking the USA
If you saw last week’s video about incredible Scotts Bluff National Monument in Western Nebraska. Then, you know we loved exploring this US national monument. If you missed our Scotts Bluff National Monument video, you can watch it here: https://youtu.be/1IOwMcR8tDM .
This week, we’re sharing one of the things that made our visit to Scotts Bluff so memorable: hiking the amazing Saddle Rock Trail! Scotts Bluff National Monument is home to almost 4 miles of hiking trails. In this park, you can hike on an actual stretch of the historic Oregon Trail or take a hike to scenic overlooks on the summit of Scotts Bluff.
As we showed in last week’s video, you can drive up to the summit of Scotts Bluff. But to really experience the park, we highly recommend hiking the park’s signature hiking trail: the Saddle Rock Trail. This 1.6 mile one-way hike (3.2 miles round trip) takes you from the Scotts Bluff National Monument Visitor Center and rises 435 feet in elevation before joining the North Overlook Trail on the summit of Scotts Bluff.
A hike on the Scotts Bluff Saddle Rock Trail brings uphill climbs, amazing views, switchbacks along the rock’s edge, and a walk through the 1933 foot tunnel, dug by hand (likely by members of the Civilian Conservation Corps – CCC) as a test for the vehicle tunnels that would later be dug to allow automobiles to make the drive to the summit.
One of the things we enjoyed most about the Saddle Rock Trail Hike is the stories that are available by phone at various points along the trail. Definitely take the time to listen to the history of the area, the geology, the plants that survive here and the people who have called this place home or passed through on their way west via Mitchell Pass.

What an amazing place, and the views! Wow!
I absolutely LOVE your enthusiasm. The fact that you drove to the top and then also hiked says a lot about the beauty of the area. Thanks for sharing. Safe travels.
Great video! Wife and I watched it last week from our home in Wisconsin. We were so impressed and inspired with the video we hooked up our trailer and headed west. We arrived at Robidoux RV park yesterday and did the Scottβs Bluff hike today. The hike was amazing and so is the SB NM visitor center. We also hiked the wagon train trail. It was so cool to be standing in the very spot that the wagon trains and pony express came through. Thanks so much for making the video on it! You two do great and interesting work! PS – according to information in the visitor center, the Civil Works Administration (CWA) did the tunnel work prior to the formation of the CCC. Happy trails:)
Excellent. So good to see!
I donβt know how much trouble it would be but it would be great if you could make a playlist from your oldest video to your latest so I could listen to everyone of your videos. I bought an e-bike like yβallβs. I love it. Thank you for sharing it.
This vlog has got it all. Click the description you'll see what I mean. I sure appreciate your effort to share these. I'm living vicariously through you. And I'm wearing Stacy's endless smile. Thanks for sharing
Excellent. Thank you very much.
Again I enjoy seeing what other people think of my hometown, Gering. I hike the Saddle Rock Trail frequently and I still enjoy it. Fun fact, the three tunnels on the summit road are the only highway tunnels in Nebraska. When I was a cadet at the Nebraska Police Academy in Grand Island the traffic law instructor covered the laws for driving through tunnels and then he remarked that he did not know why we had those since there were no tunnels in Nebraska. I had to educate him that there were tunnels in Nebraska. If it is a clear day you can see the Rocky Mountains from the summit of Scotts Bluff, Laramie Peak in Wyoming @10,000 feet is very prominent on the horizon but it has to be a clear day as the peak is about 120 miles away.
I love videos like this. I'm anxious to see Scott's Bluff now!
What a Great hiking trail and scenery. Didn't know Nebraska has such scenic places. Thanks for showing us this around.ππ
just a great vid pics are fantastic we have made it back to western Texas safe travels enjoy
I grew up in Nebraska, my history teacher father took us on car-camping tours every summer. He impressed upon us the strength and tenacity of the pioneers. Our heritage! He use to joke about the reason for the Oregon trail was the midwest winters. BTW, I now live in Oregon. Lol.
Another great videoπ
Thatβs completely beautiful π!!
Super cool guys! The narrated hike is a great feature!
Howdy from Texas! Oh my love the idea of going through the tunnel. What a view when you come out the other end. Enjoyed another chapter of history. Thanks and Love y'all.

Wonderful video!
Great video thank you all for sharing.
Spectacular views! Due to my husbandβs mobility issues, when we travel we mostly see locations from behind the windshield. Sometimes I can break off and see a little on my own, but rarely. Thank you for including this wonderful hike and all the info along with it.. super cool. Nebraska is certainly underrated!
Good video! Thanks!!
