Hitching Fifth Wheel Checklist, Step By Step (RV Living Full Time)

This video is all about hitching our Grand Design Solitude 310 GK fifth wheel to our Dodge Ram 3500 using a checklist to reduce “Hitch UP Stress.”
Now that we are RV Living Full Time, we hitch and unhitch every week to two weeks or so.
We just bought our new to us 2017 Grand Design RV in September of 2019. Though we did have a travel trailer and a Class B Travato before this RV, we still felt like newbies to fifth wheels.

Plus all those videos showing mistakes- yikes.
After ripping our awning off after our very first trip with our fifth wheel (see video link below), we knew we needed a checklist- and actually follow it- haha.
We aren’t stress free, but this process following the checklist has definitely reduced the level.

Feel free to send us an email (larry@downsizingmakescents.com) or contact us through our other social medias (like IG) if you would like a copy of our hitching checklist. We also have an unhitching checklist as well.

  • Excellent video and checklist. My only suggestion is to leave tailgate down until Tug Test is completed. This will ensure tailgate is not damaged if Tug Test is a failure.

  • I always do my pull/tug test with the tailgate down. if the test fails you will have a dented tailgate.

  • Very good, the only thing different I do is I donโ€™t put up my tail gate before I do the tug test, I never skip this step, but also, I remove the chalks to do my tug test by engaging the trailers brakes, this will let me know if my breaks on the trailer are working, there was once that we had some work done on the trailer, and after hooking up I followed the same process and found that my breaks did not engage, the dealer had done something wrong after doing the bearings that caused the break issue. So I always use my trailer brake device in the truck to engage the breaks, put it in drive and allow the trailer and truck to tug against each other, the reason I donโ€™t put my tailgate up is because if the hitching was done incorrectly itโ€™s going to drop and land on the front landing gears but it will not smash my tailgate as it comes down. I have not dropped my trailer and by following this process if I do, it will cause minor damage. Thank you for your comprehensive step by step video.

  • I love your check list how do I go about getting one thank you excellent video great job

  • Safety should always be rule number one. We do it just about the same as you the only difference is I do one walk around going down my check list for what I look for touching and looking up and down making sure everything is secure and ready for travel. I still like the way you guys do it, very safe, good job and thank you for sharing.

  • Nice! I just bought a fifth wheel to replace my rv trailer and great checklist! One question I have is why isnโ€™t there a bit of grease on the kingpin and receptacle?

  • I love your checklist, you two are an awesome couple,weโ€™ve been fulltime stationary since February and are looking to be debtfree in 8yrs and retire also

  • Hi great video.
I have a few questions. I also have a Grand Design Reflection 31MB.
When you are doing your pull test you had the scissor chock on the tires would that prevent the RV from moving

  • Amazing video!! I just bought a Grand Design Reflection and have a Dodge 2500. So your video seems to be made for me. I love all the details. Thanks so much.

  • Congrats on becoming fulltimers, one thing I didn't see on the check list was turn off the hot water heater.Would you share what part of florida you were living? If you don't want to say that's ok.

  • My husband does the outside and I do the inside. Then we reverse roles to double check everything. We have saved the RV om different occasions from getting damaged. It's been our system for 13 years. Good video

  • Wow! That is a big house and a big job. You have a beautiful rig. I don't blame you for being so careful and systematic about the whole procedure. Thank you for sharing. I'm sure that is very helpful for others who have this kind of rig.

  • One way to reduce "Hitch Up Stress" is do not let your spouse direct you. Lol

  • Good luck on your house selling!!! You first and then us!

  • Great list! Glad you shared this. I may need to start my own list. Safe travels!

  • I took a mistake early on for us to realize a check list is required. I left the steps out and as we were pulling out of our site I noticed it in the mirror. Luckily I caught before any damage was done.

  • Hi I stopped by to resub to you. My channel was hacked! I hope you rejoin me too. Have a great evening โค

  • Hi there from Montreal Canada and really enjoyed watching this video to say the least. I love how you took the time to put a great-looking checklist beside highlight in the steps. A lot of people skip this kind of thing but this is what makes a video look like it has a million views so hats off to you on that professionalism, it really shows. really great job with the walkthrough and looking forward to more in the future for sure PS I really really really love your name LOL fantastic choice

We are a husband and wife team who do video/photography by day here in Montreal and live streams at night featuring gameshow style shout outs (The wheel of shoutouts & New game called the Pusa Push for under 1k channels), Q&As on channel building and growth as well as interviews with Celebrities (two Emmy-award winnings guests and largest channel is 3.5 million followers) and big topics regarding the YouTube platform. Cheers and keep creating

  • We don't have an official checklist but typically Alex (wife) does the inside and I deal with all the outside items so each know what we are doing. But we have had time we have missed things and a full checklist is definitely a good thing.

  • Great information. We do much of this same stuff for our class a minus the hitch. So your video covers a lot.
