HOW TO BACK YOUR RV (And Trailer "Tail Swing")
***Link to cone setup below***
The most common piece of advice that is given to new RV owners is to go out to a parking lot and practice backing up around cones. That is good and all but HOW should you setup the cones???
The maneuvers in this video are setup to teach control of the trailer, and build confidence in the driver. The best drivers are confident and relaxed.
This link shows diagrams of how to setup each maneuver. Yes these are the same backing maneuvers used to test CDL drivers. If new truck drivers can parallel park a semi truck, YOU can parallel park an RV.

no no no no no…. everything about this video is completely and utterly wrong. when teaching the spouse how to back a camper or a trailer there must be yelling, screaming, and crying. and always of course accompanied with some damage and the wife stomping off and not talking to you for the whole weekend. this way you have a peaceful weekend. LOL
seriously though, great vid.
Great video, the tips are fantastic! I've backed smaller trailers thousands of times, and the short ones are particularly cranky… But, we just bought a 30' travel trailer, so I will be reviewing your video and practicing. One place where performance pressure exists is when backing a boat trailer into a landing, with a bunch of others waiting in line and watching…
This is a great video, awesome tips all the way around. If I've learned anything over my experience with trailers is just relax and don't rush.
OMG! This video is amazing. The best I’ve seen thus far. I’m very new to driving a 32 ft gooseneck flat bed. I’m proud of what I’ve done so far with backing. But the next time I get out to practice I’m sure I’ll be very proud of myself even more. Many things you explained was parts I kept telling my husband I needed to figure out. You’re totally a blessing and you should have a driving school at your level of expertise on instruction. Thank you so much. ❤️
Thx I’m starting a job picking up and dropping off units. Only thing I’m worried about is back it up, but ur video helped
Brilliant! He explained and demonstrated what to do with your steering wheel, which is what beginners struggle with. He explained pivot points. Nicely done! Thank you for explaining the ‘how’ and ‘why’.
I always go back to watch. Thanks for this!
Took a little digging but this is exactly what I was looking for. Great video! Thanks
Truck driving 101, good video!
do ya'll have an email if I want to send you a question but not for everyone?
I'm gonna make the SO watch this a few times and try to get out to run her through them. Thank you very much. It would be great if you had a drone to get a shot of these exercises from above.
Very helpful and detail oriented video! Thank you!
best video out there! Thank you!
This is the best YouTube video on parking your trailer that I have found. Great job guys!
What better place to teach backing trailers? I graduated truck driving school there in August and will tell you that Mr. Wagner and all the guys there are great teachers. Even if Mike kept the classroom cold enough to hang meat in. 😁
You guys make it look so easy! Great job!
Oh my goodness! THANK YOU so much! My wife and I watched your video last night and but into practice this morning, within an hour we where parking our new 23' camper. Nether of us have ever towed before. OUTSTANDING VIDEO!
Great lesson. Demonstrating the tail swing is an eye-opener. There are many instances of turning hard right with traffic on your left side. I can see how easy it is to wreck. Parking is a dangerous business. Knowing exactly how and the limits of how far can make or break a camping experience. If you hit something it's a ruined trip.
Best back up video I have seen
Thank you very much I’m a retired firetruck driver I know how to back but not with a trailer I was worried about some of the techniques you solve a lot of problems thank you
Thanks, very helpful
Looking to buy a cargo trailer and moving to Alaska! Great video.
Thank you. I learned more from your videos than all the others combined.
The one ting I didn't hear you say is {Take your time and go SLOW} you can't back a trailer quickly. But you are absolutely correct on the GOAL Rule.
Here's another way to help get the thinking of backing up a trailer and that is when you are driving forward you have your hands at 10 & 2 Right? / well backing up a trailer have your hands at 8 & 4 O clock. move the the left the trailer will go left – move the the right the trailer will go to the right. But most important is GO – S L O W ! when backing up.
I sometimes see guys have there hands at the top of the wheel and back up and get in jams cause they think the trailer will respond in the direction that they are turning when the trailer starts to respond the opposite.
The reference point of the trailer being at 11o'clock or 1 o'clock position are very great point to learn. Great info!! Thanks
The problem is, nobody takes the time to go, to a vacant parking lot, and take the time to practice, backing up, left turns, right turns, they think it's easy, the 1st thing, they do, when, they back up is, look out the back window, ha ha, it's only mirrors, they forgot they have a trailer, hooked up, practice, practice, practice, visualize, visualize, practice, practice, everyone had a first time, great video 👍
I love this. I recently purchased my first travel trailer and I'm single and plan to travel on my own. Every video I saw started with "You have to have walkie talkies and a spotter". Uhh.. well, Unless I can train my cat to spot that isn't going to happen. I took the trailer out to an empty parking lot a few days ago and you are right.. I had no idea WHAT to practice. It wasn't horrible, but I still have a ways to go. The tips you gave made me think about it different and some things really clicked. I can't wait to get back out there and practice some more!
Would you like to test rv propane quick connect or suv doorstep ?
My fear of backing an RV led me to truck driving school and a Class-A commercial driver's license. The upside is I can drive a rig for some extra cash.
Pro tip. If you get frustrated trying this method with the cones. Run a few over. It helps reduce stress and shows those cones who's boss
You seem calm and competent. I only hope to emulate you. Thank you, very informative.
Thanks for the video. I'd like to see you back into a campsite with tighter road space. I'll practise but it would be really good to find this kind of instructional video.
Cheers!
Dang!!! You are a flipping master! How long did it take you to perfect all of this??? Impressive!
