How to Drive a Motorhome/RV β Driving Tips: Off-Tracking & Rear Overhang
Turning an RV’s steering wheel creates a couple of situations that require special attention. Drone aerial footage makes it clearer than ever what happens when you go around a corner with an RV!
We always make a point of mentioning that we’re not professionals when it comes to RV repair and maintenance. We get lots of kind comments about the clarity of our instructional videos, and people sometimes assume at least one of us has a teaching background. That is indeed the case.
For the first time, we can remove the “we’re not professionals” disclaimer, because one of us Geeks is indeed a former professional… in the driving realm.

Peter’s resume as a motorcoach operator and driving instructor is substantial. Not only did he drive tour buses in a big city, but he was also the Safety & Training Manager for one of the largest bus companies in North America. He designed and ran the training program, hiring and training hundreds of professional drivers, and dozens of driving instructors, over the years.
In addition, his driving prowess in the American Public Transit Association’s annual Bus Roadeo driving competition earned him a shelf full of trophies.
We intend for this to be the first of many RVgeeks Driving School videos, designed to share the concepts required to master the operation of a large vehicle, and increase safety on the road. We get so many questions about driving, that we thought it was about time we shared something from a bona fide expert’s point of view.

With over 3 million miles under my belt I just found your channel and subscribed. There is always something to learn!
Where can I locate the information on wheel cut for my RV? I haven't found anything about it in the manual or online. I have a 2000 Winnebago Adventurer 37g motorhome. Thanks for the info, if you know it. And thank you for this video. Very helpful.
Thankyou! Finally a relevant vid on driving class A's β
Thanx I'm actually working on my cdl and we're talking abt tail swing and your drone shot made more sense that a day in class thanx again
Planning on buying a RV next spring. The rear overhang tip was one that I never thought of….I'm going to need mirrors and cameras all over mine to feel comfortable driving it.
I'm so glad you're shit's in my recommended now after one video! I'm learning so much lol. The voice is perfect. Like a driving instructor video.
This is stunningly clear. You have done a fantastic job
Found your video, my husband and I have a 43 foot Holiday Rambler Navigator and he got seriously sick, he was the only one who knew how to drive it, so I am on YouTube looking up how to drive a 43 ft RV. Any advice?? Thanks for your video
I want to buy a class C but I like some of the bigger ones, really should be categorized class A if we go by size.
I am so glad mine is under 30 ft. HOLY COW. This was super informative and not full of fluff. Thank you.
Jan 2023 – still one of the best reminder videos ever. Thank you! π
An obvious question perhaps – but I'm getting mixed answers from various websites. What license do you need to drive these monsters? I suspect some rule changes occurred because of the variances in the answers I'm finding.
excellent video! thank you! I'm learning…or whall I say…want to learn even when my husband is hesitant! i can do this…but patience and being calm will help….wish me luck!
Love it ! Glad I maneuver a tanker bcuz the trailer has no over hang.
great video.
Thank you!
Backing up a class c rv 27foot long .
And turning into a parking spot. How wide does the parking spot need to be and how wide should the alley be to do this successfully?
We donβt even have a rig yet but this is an amazing – easy to understand – video on driving RVs.
This guy not only makes sense but he's educational but he makes sense it's like hard to fight his logic it just makes sense
Well this guy makes a lot of sense but we need to know a video when you pull a car behind the back
Your videos and expertise is greatly appreciated. I look forward to more of your videos. Thank you!!!
The thing I am most nervous about is also pulling a smaller car behind us on our giant road trip we plan on taking. It just bugs me, but I know it is in some ways necessary for us not to have to drive Irma around for everything! (Irma is our Rig) . I can drive the home itself fine. But also having the car makes me cringe a little
Thanks for this! I am a deep thinker and I am glad that you described this video the way you did! I am looking into getting one but scared to drive it⦠however I tend to do things that scare me, thanks again:
The best video I've seen about driving an RV and I've driven a 44 ft for 4 years. I'd love to see one on parallel parking. We camp in a 46 ft space that we have to parallel park into. Always a scary adventure.
Great video, but how do I know when I can start making the right turn?
this is such a good video!!!
A great video although I would have liked to have seen the same turn executed showing a technique to minimize The effects of offtracking.
This video was great for learning to handle my Skoolie and very helpful for referring back to for training my brother to drive my bus
Newbie here. Someone suggested u guys and i love it!
Great information. Thank you!
Some have front overhang what would you do there?
Great content. Thank you!!
my brother inherited a tiny Toyota motorhome of course it had a lot of overhang rear swing. Follow them to the gas station and after filling up he started pulling away immediately turned sharp with the tail and almost taking out the gas pump he was completely unaware I reminded him next stop. And that was only about an 18-foot long rig !
I could really use a diagram on how to approach the math for the space I would need to turn into my house driveway given x ft of driveway width and x ft of road width.
As an old 18 wheeler driver, this is good to know. When I work for the State of Texas, we used trucks that did not 'bend in the middle'. You would be surprised at the difference it made in driving!!
This was so nice and informal thank you so much!
Thank you for this! Helps. Getting a 31 foot class c thor outlaw next month, so nice to prepare.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience
