Lots of RVers think their black tank is clean when they just empty it and flush out the sewer hose with water from the grey tank.
Even those RVers who use a black tank flush system often don’t utilize the most important piece of equipment necessary to monitor the cleanliness of the black tank: a clear sewer elbow.
And even using a clear sewer elbow on your camper isn’t enough. As we demonstrate, using a black tank flush connection, and plenty of water STILL won’t do the job. Using the proper technique is essential for maintaining the black tank and keeping it clean and odor-free.
We go through the step-by-step instructions for making sure that your RV holding tanks stay clean and fresh, making your motorhome, travel trailer or fifth wheel a nicer place to be.
We’ll also cover a few basics about sewer connections, flush valve use, toilet chemicals and special techniques for cleaning and deodorizing a problem sewage holding tank. In addition, we’ll review some details that every RVer should know about when and where to empty their black tank.

At 14.22 of video he referenced water softener, did he mean to say fabric softener? Not exactly sure what water softener is 🤔
I use toilet cleaner made by Melalueca its safe for septice tanks.
Do you need to water regulator to flush black tank
My wife and I just bought our 1st used RV a few weeks ago and are taking our 1st trip in it this week. I am very nervous because I haven't done any of this ever before. I am the type of person that needs to SEE things done instead of just reading about how to get things done. This video is GREAT !! I feel a lot better about dumping that black tank now. There's still a lot of things to learn about, but I am subscribed to this channel now. THANK YOU.
This is a really good video. We're getting a 98 model Aljo 5th wheel from a family friend. It was well taken care of. I'm excited to remodel it.
I had a pair of gloves like that, with a cloth like inside liner. That liner became moldy and I didn't notice. It got under my nails on a hot sweaty day and for the last thirty years has been a problem. I wouldn't keep them too long and you may rethink the disposable gloves.
Your videos are great!
What kind of chemical/cleaner do you use for toilet…since your rubber ring is still in tact! 😊
I don’t even have an RV but this was very helpful, I would also get a portable toilet with water and have a poop hole in the ground for the remains for afterwards
This tutorial was AMAZING!!! IT ANSWERED A LOT OF QUESTIONS I HAD. THANK YOU!!Q
People make it sound so much scarier than it actually is…Thanks for the video
Love the ice idea!
Dump black tank soon after you stopped traveling .Black tank will be mixed up for better cleaning
Absolutely the most informative video I have seen. We just went from a popup camper with a small porta potty cassette type system to our first travel trailer and your video has given me confidence. I even hit the pause button and went out and bought a "Y" adapter and the anti-backflow valve.
You’re wearing your black water gloves to turn on and off the potable water at the Y valve and could possibly create a cross infection situation. I hope you are sanitizing the whole Y fitting and potable hose after each black tank dump.
great video. I know this is old video but could you please tell me what the name of the access hole and its threaded plug is called for part replacement. Im talking about the hole through the bottom of the side box that contains all of the water and tank components.
Can you make an instructional video on dating & relationships?
Ice, that's awesome
what if your sensors don't work for tank fullness. I have timed mine but not sure exactly how much time it takes to fill, any suggestions? You guys rock by the way, love the videos
I often hear that it is okay to leave the gray water hose open when hooked up at a campsite. But doesn't leaving the hose open produce off gassing into the RV?
My husband forgets about it and over flows all the time.
Great Vid!
I'm a total Travel Trailer newb …. so I know nothing about cleaning my black tank. However, I'm also a mechanical engineer and this is BY FAR the best black tank tutorial I've watched …. and I've watched a dozen or more trying to learn !!!
Applying some plumber’s grease around the seal works great.

new rv guy. thanks for video
This is actually very cool!
Awesome video guys! Picking up my first RV in a few days and educating myself as much as possible. Appreciate the effort and professionalism.
Is it advisable to put cleaning chemicals into the black tank while cleaning?
People talking shit about his clear elbow don’t have well maintained tanks
My trailer doesn't have a tank flush attachment on it.
Amazing video! Thank you for this! At the very end of the video- do you add RID-X only if you need to flush it out a second time! What if it smells great and your done with the process? Do you still add RID-X? I will be using my TT once a month and I am not sure how to treat the tanks for storage for the month in between use. Thank lots and cheers!!!
Don't have a RV yet, but hope to have one soon. Saving for future reference!
Absolutely brilliant! Well done!
"clean as a whistle" that's what the doctor said to me when I got my first colonoscopy.
