***INFORMATION UPDATE*** Our 13,500 BTU RV air conditioner actually pulls about 150 amps instead of 73 amps while running. In the video I did not allow the A/C to run long enough for the compressor to kick on. Unfortunately this means, to run our A/C regularly, it requires roughly double the wattage of solar panels (so 1500 watts) and at least double the amp-hour battery bank capacity (150+ Ah per hour of A/C usage at night) described in the video. However, at these high current loads the batteryâs Ah capacity drops considerably and wonât last nearly as long as it would at lower current loads so youâll probably need much more than 150 Ah battery capacity per hour of usage. The starting wattage information is correct however. But installing a soft starter can alleviate the high starting wattage requirement and therefore a smaller inverter, such as a 3000 watt inverter, can be used.
The message is still the same though. To regularly run the A/C on solar you will need an incredibly big solar array and battery bank. So much so that, in my opinion, it is not worth it. Your best bet is to either get used to no A/C or – and I hate to say this – run a generator when you need A/C. Thanks!!
