how to sanitize an RV water tank – Do it Yourself

How to Sanitize an RV Water Tank
//Sanitizing your RV’s water system is an important task that every RV owner should know how to do.

Some people may say that you shouldn’t drink the water from your camper. Well, I’m here to tell you that after many years of drinking water straight from the tap, I’m fine. The reason is that I always sanitize my water system if my RV has been sitting for a while without being used.

How often should you sanitize? I don’t have an exact answer to this question, but here are some guides. *After winter storage
*After not being used for over 3 weeks
*At least 2 times per year

In the video I show how to sanitize the tank, pump and lines, but if you want to sanitize your city water connection too, check out the article linked below. It includes a checklist taking you through the steps to sanitize your camper water tank and lines.

//The next thing you will need to do is sanitize your water lines to kill anything that started growing while your RV was in storage. Check out the suggested video at the end to learn how.

  • You should use hydrogen peroxide to sanitize your water lines and tanks.
If you use bleach your pump seal will fail and/or leak Rubber gaskets will fail and/or leak and your discharge will fail and/or leak more quickly.

  • Great vid!

I have heard of people putting a couple of litres of lemon cordial into their tank after flushing with bleach.

It helps mask any initial residual bleach taste that may be left until you fill the tank a few times.

I think that it sounds plausible?

    What are your thoughts?

  • Good video, but man you've gotta use a ton of water sanitizing every week! I do it once a year and it's a pain in the butt! i've gotta use 200 gallons "rinsing" the bleach smell out

  • A lot of sanitizing videos tell you to bypass the water heater before turning water pump to run through inside RV fixtures as the Chlorine is hard on the parts inside the water heater.

  • Hi 👋🏼- great tips! new subscriber & trailer weekender here . I’m in the Arizona desert 🌵☀️ 😅- do you recommend putting water in the tanks for short term storage? I feel like we should leave them empty when not in use, but would like some advice from experienced campers too! Thanks in advance!

  • Isn't bleach and chlorine dangerous to consume? It also makes the water taste gross. I'd rather not use bleach. What are the alternatives?

  • Non of this does any good if the clear vent hose is full of black mold like mine was.  My tank was clean as were the filler hose and hose to the 12vf pump.  Because my tank was split, the underbelly was dropped then the tank.  Only then was the vent hose seen to be black so it was replaced. The vent is not normally seen, so how does flushing the tank help?  Or the filler hose?  It doesn't, so do everyone a favor and come up with an idea that doesn't involve pushing the mold into the tank.I still have the vent hose and pics as well.

  • Do you remove the in-line water filter during the sanitation process?
