Is Toyota Tacoma a Good Tow Vehicle for a Small RV?

We have owned our 2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road for 6 month and have used it to tow our 2018 NuCamp T@B 400 on several trips. In this episode we will give you an overview of the truck, discuss what we like about it and take you along for a ride while towing our trailer. We purchased our Tacoma in August of 2019 from Jim White Toyota in Toledo, Ohio. It had been a one owner lease vehicle that was Toyota Certified when we purchased it with just under 32,000 miles on it. We paid $28,000 for the truck. Prior to the Tacoma, we were towing our trailer with a 2014 Toyota SR5 4Runner.

  • I have a 2020 tacoma TRD off road and am looking at purchasing a Little guy max which is the same size as the T@b 400. What type of hitch do you use and do you use a weight distribution hitch?

  • Thanks for the outstanding review! I’ve subscribed

  • Excellent video! You really hit all the major points.

  • Great Video! I was searching for a video about a Tacoma and it's towing capability with a trailer in 4K to 5K area. You covered everything in a great informative way. I do have a couple questions, did you you use the ECT for supposedly extra power while towing and did you stay in manual the entire time or did you use the manual shift feature to move between gears better? All and all fantastic info and great job. Take care and happy travels.

  • If you have a tow package YES..if not stay within the specifications and don't modify the truck otherwise it will affect your towing configuration

  • 2021 does has power seats and auto off head lights.. Him saying folding down seat back seats "not being level" doesn't make sense… because he actually does it.. Power back window is standard and has "apply and android play"on the radio. Also all the Toyota's have "SOS" (safety Connect) which to us old ppl, is like "On star". Also, there should be a "ECT button" which changes the shifting points when you are hauling something heavy. My customers swear by it. ***All you have to do is lift the front hood up on that Tacoma. You will NEVER see a heavier hood. The Truck he is driving is a Beast… one problem, you have to pay for it. Anyone driving a Dakota or Ranger is just a stingy bastard who doesn't want to shell out the money needed to buy a Tacoma… period. By the way.. I never ever see a Doge/ Ram buyer shop for Tacoma.. can't tell you why, but they existent at my dealership.

  • 8:21 You can put the head rests into the holes on the seat you raised up. They're made to hold all 3 head rests.

  • Hello. love the channel. I was thinking of buying a Tacoma to tow my Tab 320. I test drove a sport and the ride was horrible. How is the ride on the Off Road? Did changing up the tires smooth hings out?

  • Thanks for the video, trying to decide between a 4Runner and Tacoma to tow a Lance 1575 (2775 lbs base weight), any words of advice that may help me decide?

I've heard that the Tacoma's transmission seems to shift a lot more than the 4Runners and it likes to keep the engine screaming at a higher rpm when towing?

It's also ironic that the Tacoma has a higher towing capacity than the 4Runner, but has a significantly lower payload capacity which is disappointing.

I would like to go to a bigger Lance 1995 (4265 base weight) but I don't think either vehicle would pull it comfortably, thoughts?? I don't want to go with a full size truck as I like to do a lot of off road exploring and I've found a full size is just to big for doing what I like to do.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hey man there is a spot on the bottom seat cushions when folded up for your head rests. Look for the little holes you can see at 7:44.

  • Great video. Going to buy a Tacoma to drive to Alaska towing a small travel trailer. I'm going to go with a camper shell probably an A.R.E. You can secure taller items and also put some kayaks on top.

  • Delaney i appreciate your insight and love how you takes us along. I know today your finally in a real Truck lol; Me I will not tow with a Truck that has less Torque then engine horsepower. Of course this is when i have choice and i'm out shopping for a new tow vehicle. Toyota gives you a tow package and forgets to place an OEM break controller inside the truck. Instead you have to go buy an after market one, makes no sense. Great choice in tires.

  • You could buy a new Taco with power seat if you weren't so cheap. I was surprised tat people were worried bout MP on an RV.

  • I've heard a lot of conflicting info about whether or not its ok to use S5. Is this the gear you mainly use ?;S4 just seems to rev too high

  • Great video, exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!

  • I’m towing a Lance 1995 (dry weight 4800 lbs, max loaded weight 6200 lbs) with a 2020 Tacoma. In 2020 the tow package is standard on all V6 Tacoma’s. I would like to see an in dash brake controller included as there is no really good place to mount an after market controller. It’s a TRD sport 2 wheel drive. Max tow rating is 6800 lbs. Gas mileage in my first trip was about 12 mpg on hwy 101 on the central California coast. I often used the cruise control in the ECT mode. 10 way power seat is standard in 2020. Toyota is listening. Over all I’m very happy with this truck. I picked this over other mid size trucks because of it’s reputation for reliability and longevity.

  • I would buy a truck from this guy if he was a car salesman. P.S I just watch another video that says when pulling a trailer is best to switch to manual shifting and the transition doesn’t have to be looking for the right gear you selected yourself at the right rpm.
