  • Would it be better to spray the fresh water into the black tank hose to rinse it out BEFORE disconnecting it from the sewer, so that the water goes in the sewer and not on the grass? And did you change gloves before grabbing the fresh water hose? I appreciate this video. I am trying to learn everything before I buy my RV.

  • You didn't do a pull test to make sure your trailer was securely hitched so that it doesn't drop on your truck bed.

  • I'm gonna keep commenting to show support. Another great video.

  • I use a white hose for drinking water, and I use a black hose to clean the sewer parts.
Definitely drain the black tank and then use the gray tank to rinse out the black tank and then disconnect the sewer hose from the RV and rinse everything from that end going toward the sewer rinsing one piece at a time as I go and all that water goes down the drain.
Sometimes I will hold the sewer hose up making a loop and fill that loop with clean water and then dump all that all at once to thoroughly rinse out the hose and everything down stream into the drain.

  • Can you further explain the green bag in the toilet before you take off thing? Also, are you saying you leave 33% of the black water in the tank when leaving to slosh around and clean the inside of the tank during travel or fill the black water tank back up with clean water after flushing 100% of the black water?

  • Always love your updates. John I follow a similar format as you. The one point you made about unplugging until the last moment to save wear on the battery is one that I need to do. Thank you!

  • I carry a separate green gardenhose for cleaning the sewer hose. …. our drinking water hose is white, I carry a separate green hose for servicing the sewer. That way I never have to worry about contaminating our drinking water.

Do not camp with the black tank open. The liquid will drain out leaving a tank full of solids that will harden over time creating a huge problem.

I never dump the black tank unless it is at least half full. I will add water to the black tank to dump it. I always make sure I have plenty of water to push the solids out of the tank.

Also, I dump the black tank completely, leave the black valve open, open the grey valve, let it flow for a few seconds to get the black waste flushed out of the sewer hose then I pick up the sewer hose higher than the tanks to force some of the grey water into the black tank. Then I close the black valve, finish draining the grey tank and clean the sewer hose with a green garden hose.

My theory is, I get all the solids out of the black tank and partially fill the black tank with soapy water to help clean the black tank.

    Happy RVing. Kev

  • I recommend nitrile instead of vinyl gloves. Bring a plastic trash bag to dispose of them. Once you've flushed your black tank and hose, break it at the rig. Take a spare hose that is connected to a splitter at the hose bib and flush the black hose down the drain–never on the ground. You can stop by the dump station and rinse the hose and fitting there as they usually have a concrete drain basin to the pipe so you can lay it on the concrete and hose it with the effluent running down into the sewer and not the ground. Note that putting away wet hoses, which everyone does, creates a greenhouse for goobers. If you're getting odors, flush better and drain better.

Just think of those gloves and hoses as flesh eating bacteria- or Kryptonite- don't let the contaminated surfaces touch anything clean. Dirty to dirty. A plastic bin works well. You can hose it out and flush with the previously mentioned soln. at 9 parts dihydrogen monoxide to one part sodium hypochlorite. Learn how to remove gloves from anybody in the medical profession so you don't contaminate yourself. If you don't do this correctly, you'll contaminate your truck door handle, keys and shifter knob. Consider making a pit stop on the way out at a bath house to wash your hands really well, not to mention it allows me further before the next potty break for my prostate.

I always walk my site and pick up the trash others left so its better than I found it. I don't want to get blamed for those bottle caps and cigarette butts. Make sure you leave the breakers 'off' and the lid closed on the service post.

I argue with my wife about this but ALWAYS report problems to the management. How do they know to tighten that leaky hose bibb that's wasting water and running up operation costs? Be part of the solution to make these parks better for the next guy. If the tree branches need to be trimmed let them know. They'll thank you.

Great stuff kids! Thx for sharing.

  • 4:08 WHOLLY SHIT JOHN, Did you just pour your Shitty water out right there in the grass and then Wash off the Drainpipe right by the Power pole….

WOW, now I have to remember that I'll be walking in shit water from others when I go to plug in.

  • Why do you bungee cord the bumper cover?

  • Being a pre-newbie, I saw a friend hook up to the sewer at his site, but have never done it myself, because we don’t have our RV yet, even tho our plan is similar to yours and others. We are both retired and are in the process of selling “everything” and going on the road full time. First let me say that I do appreciate all of the “mistakes“ and “do rights” and tips that you show us in your videos. It is very helpful to me, and I am sure to others, as well. You, as well as others, tend to skip part of the process in the video, but no movement is too trivial for someone trying to do it the first time. Speed up the mundane parts of the video, if needed. Also, you said that you were going to stay hooked up to the electrical at the park until after you pulled in your slides, but you didn’t. Was the truck running, providing charging power to your house batteries as you pulled in your slides, or was that just strictly battery power? My wife and I love you and Mercedes, and your life together, so please don’t be offended by my comments…just searching for knowledge from those who have traveled that road before us.

  • Great video John.  The only thing I do differently is to keep my stabilizing/leveling jacks down until I pull my slides in.  I've heard horror stories about damaged slides/components when they are pulled in or slid out when the trailer is unlevel or unsteady.  So I keep hooked up to shore power to save batteries like you…then I pull in my slides, raise my leveling/stabilizing jacks, raise my tongue jack (travel trailer), hook up the truck, lower the tongue jack, disconnect shore power, connect power cable to truck (lights, brakes and battery charge), make sure all is secure, do a walk around and I'm good to go.  Not trying to be an armchair quarterback….just my 2 cents. Thanks again for a great video!

  • I do much the same as you do when preparing to leave my site. Maybe not quite so paranoid when storing my sewer hose but I usually pour a couple of buckets of water in the toilet and let it rinse a bit and then a couple of buckets of water with the additive. Don’t forget the wheel chocks, I say that because I have forgotten mine before. I use mine about nine months of the year so it gets lots of use.

  • My wife does a walk around after I secure the outside for moving. She never trusts anyone but herself 🙂 4 eyes are better than 2

  • For extra storage for your sewer hose.
I went to Lowe's a pick up a vinyl post for a fence.they are just a little bit bigger then the trailer bumper.I mounted in the pass through storage
Compartment. Mounted to go from door to door. Put 2 end caps on.that way if the hose move in side you can still get out .now I have a bigger rig.with 2 black an 2 gray water need a lot more hose.so now we got clear containers 4" deep about 3 ft long.you an fit 2 25 ft sewer in them. An they stack nice.for the water hose I got an orange extension cord real.left enough hose out to hook up the faucet.then just roll the hose on the real.just roll out what you need .An roll back up an put the 2 ends together. As for putting the bombs in the black tank.most of the time they do not dissolve. What I found out the best chemicals to use is TankTech.2 cap full to 40 gallons. An is good to use in gray tanks to.when you dump the sell is not strong most of the you can smell it. As for that earthquakes when are going down the road.with the suspension that are trailers today are very smooth.

  • Great video…But we don't like to have our fresh water hose anywhere near the stinky-slinky. Buy a Y connect for the water and a separate flexhose to rinse out the stinky-slinky when you have full hookups. What Carol R said…

  • I see there are plenty of comments about the white hose being used, so I’ll leave that matter alone. However, seeing you disconnect your sewer hose from the clear connector and letting the remain drain on the ground before cleaning the connector and hose on the ground is wrong on so many levels. PLEASE do not do that and do not teach others to do that. Do you want your toddler walking through your raw sewage, or your dog, which would be drawn to such lovely smells? Your videos have been good and interesting to this point, but you may want to do an update on what you’ve learned from these comments to right the wrongs.

  • Don't use you white drinking hose for this get a green hose for clean up…

  • Did you use your drinking water hose to wash out your sewer hose. I carry a separate green hose for clean up white hose for drinking??

  • I hope that is a ‘special hose’ you just use for cleaning your back water pipes and fittings and you keep it away from everything else.

  • My wife and I have been RVing since 1998 owning our 3rd fifth wheel now. We aren't full timer's but plan on taking our 2016 Keystone Montana south for the winters someday. I like your video and wanted to mention that from what I know about any RV with slideouts is that when you pull or push your slides, the RV should be level. I saw you had your rig hitched up first before the slides were in. I could be wrong, maybe it was level. Just my thoughts and wanted to keep you from any future problems with your slides. Keep up the good work.

  • We keep a spray bottle of 1/10 Bleach and water solution and after spraying out the hose and fitting (while attached to the sewer still so the run off does not go onto the ground) we spray each end and the fitting before storing then we spray the area around the sewer connection at the site just as a courtesy to the next camper to get the site! I don't go crazy just a spritz or two.

  • Just a thought, but you might want to consider leaving the sewer hose connected to the sewer system at the park when rinsing the hose. After you rinse the hose onto the ground, the next camper will be walking around that area where you did the rinsing not knowing a sewer hose was just rinsed there. Dogs and children could be walking there as well. I look forward to future videos!

  • Your teaching folks to use there fresh water hose to clean sewer waste NOT COOL.

  • Ok, I really enjoyed this video, I found it very informative and interesting.

    Suggestion:

Do a video on the Black Tank cleaning itself. You discussed a lot, I’m guessing 85%, but a step A to Z might help us a lot…

Especially seeing the RV Movie with Robin Williams!

    Thanks,

    Dave

  • Great video but seeing the white water hose used to flush the sewer was cringeworthy. NEVER DO THAT!! Use a specific water hose for that dirty deed. Ours is a dark orange which matches the sewer hose. We're newbies too so appreciate you sharing your tips but sometimes we learn as we go. Keep the videos coming!

  • Love these videos! Very helpful! There is a glitch with the link for the top 10 must haves in an rv. It says it is disabled when I click on it. Do you have a different link to this list? Thank you again for sharing this info!!! Safe travels!!

  • We never use our drinking water hose for cleaning our tank hose. We carry a hose marked specifically for black tank cleaning.
