Summer in an RV get’s hot fast! And if you don’t have enough power to run your RV AC, RVing in the summer feels like roasting in an oven! If you’re going to RV full time, or go boon docking, prepping your RV AC for low power situations will ensure that you’re not… Hot & Wet.

  • Ok so we are looking at doing this for our Cruiser. How has the system been working for you this past year? any issues? Are you happy with it still? Do you still recommend them?

  • These units cost $300 each. For a live in RV, I would buy one.

  • Are you two sure you're not related? You talk over each other just like twins do.

  • Based on the title of this video, I thought you were comparing the Soft Start RV to the MicroAir Easy Start. Now I really curious what the parentheses mean… (Soft Starter RV vs Easy Start) ???

  • Hello Guys,

I like you guys and ran across this video and felt I needed to say something. This is not new magical technology; it has been around for years. This device uses technology invented by Nichola Tesla called a capacitor. The capacitor is like a battery that will store electricity releasing it quickly for the compressor to use.

When an A/C starts (including your home A/C), the compressor uses 4-8 time the power it needs to run. This is when the compressor is drawing the most through the RV/Campground power supply. The A/C unit will have a component called a start capacitor that provides just enough electricity to get the compressor running. When the A/C is struggling to start up (shaking/vibrating), it’s called hard starting. One thing to note, more than normal startup noise is a sign that the start capacitor is failing, and it should be replaced before the compressor also fails.

Adding a much bigger capacitor inline will make a boost of power available to the compressor without the resistance of pulling the power through the power lines.

“Hard Start” kits are commonly sold as capacitor and a wired relay (with a time delayed reset). Most of the time you can by these as a kit made for the A/C unit you have so not cutting of wires needed. Do a quick search for a Hard Start kit for your AC on amazon and you will find them for under $50.00.

Next: Wire nuts should never be used on an RV. The movement and vibration will cause them to fall off. When that happens, you have a bare electrical wire floating around a lot of metal parts.

The parts are mounted inside the AC unit so there is no need for the weatherproof enclosure. There is also no need for other electronics or LED indicator lights. As I said this is not a new technology, I guess they are trying to justify the $300.00+- price tag to folks that do not know how an A/C operates.

This is likely why they encourage the owner to do it themselves. The A/C guy would likely sell them the same thing for MUCH less.

In short these do work and recommended but this product is insanely overpriced. Order the on you need from Amazon and install it. Or have an A/C guy install a Hard Start kit for you and it would still be way cheaper.

  • For $300 it must work, no doubt

  • Yeah I am 100 miles in the middle of nowhere . No service of any kind . But dam it I better have my 50 amps so I can build this no place . Gotta have it . Funny

  • I think Sage should stay in the house with Grandma because when you are under 12 years old hanging out with Grandma is cool especially for little kids.

  • I’m giving the soft start a shot on my 3 A Class coach A/C units John, you convinced me.

  • Saw both videos and now I want a SoftStart just in case they run out and I don't even own an RV…hut still want one of those SoftStart.

  • This product claims that you can run both AC's on 30AMP service. Here's the thing, my coach has a switch between the front AC and the rear AC. The only time I can run both AC's is if I am running the 7000 W generator because it has a 20A dedicated circuit for the rear AC. So if I am plugged into shore power, how can I run both AC's at the same time? Or perhaps I am missing something. Only one AC at a time when plugged into shore power. Both simultaneously when running off the generator.

  • Don't know if anyone has asked this or not but do these void a new RV warranty?

  • It says soft start vs easy start in the title but was their a comparison or is this just promoting soft start? If I missed it please let me know.

  • Just ordered, and love your channel.

  • Love the ( stay longer at mother and laws ) comment 😂

  • Do you still have the discount code? Is it the usual RVOC?

  • Thank you for this video. I’m fairly new to RV’ing and could use some advice from the “Odd Squad”. I stay at a place with 50 amp service, but my rig is only 30 amp. Question 1: Do I buy a 50amp surge protector and plug directly into the pedestal and then plug a converter into the surge protector?

Question 2: is it safe to use a converter? Does anyone have any recommendations on one versus another?

    Thanks so much!

  • Please be accurate with your titles. There was no comparison with EasyStart, so don't promise something that is not delivered.

  • Hey guys!!! Did John get a stain on the old shirt? Did he just happen to get a new one? What gives? You're out of uniform soldier…

I do believe that I'm going to get a pair of these. I like to run my generator but I really need this to plug in and run the AC units. I take if from the video that you think the cost is worth it for the price.

I would like to do a video about this as well. So, maybe I will get this and add to my generator series.

    Thanks for the recommendation.

    Pat

  • RV Odd Couple: Hey, thanks for the great video. I do have a Sandpiper 381RBOK 2017. I was wonder with your champion generator if you can run both ac with the fridge at the same time ? Is there a difference between your product and micro air easy start ? Wich one take lower amps ? Greetings.

  • Thanks for bringing this to our attention and the discount. We had heard about the competitive product but were not happy with the high pric and weren't sure we needed one. We boondocked a few weekends ago during the heatwave and could only get one AC unit to run with our Champion 3400W and it took way too long to cool down, so we went to bed hot… So we just bought one of these so that doesn't happen again!

  • Can you provide the link to order? I think it's embedded deep in all the comments.

  • Thanks for the info. Do you know if installing these will void the factory warranty on a brand new 2020 unit?

  • I wonder why RV manufacturers don't automatically just install these?

It's so simple AND it makes sense

  • Just wondering if y'all have ever researched the flow jet Portable macerator pump

  • You're out of uniform, John!! Thanks for reviewing this….definitely going to check it out.  I'm guessing since it draws less power, then your generator fuel consumption will be less as well.  Did you happen to hook it up to a Kill-A-Watt plug to see what it was drawing before and after the SoftStart install?  Hope all is well.  I'm playing catch-up on your videos.  Take care!

  • I would have been nice to see the installation process instead of just talking about it.

  • When does the offer expire? Purchasing this and the TPMS is EXPENSIVE. I’d like to phase them out but not miss the discount.

  • I have 3 AC units, so I must look into the soft start.
