MORE ABOUT THIS EPISODE
With all old RV flooring removed it was time to install new flooring from the cab of our Class C motorhome all the way back through the bathroom to the bedroom. We decided to keep the carpet in the bedroom for now.
WHAT TYPE OF FLOORING DID WE USE?
We chose Stainmaster vinyl plank flooring from Lowes. I bought 9 boxes of flooring at around $45 each. In the end I used six boxes of flooring and returned the rest. Each plank is 6 inches wide by 48 inches long. The interior walls of my RV span 8 feet. The six inch width includes the snap-in portion, so the actual visible width of each plank is just under 6 inches.
FLOORING INSTALLATION
There are very few long walls on my RV. Most have walls, cabinets or slide outs. I chose to start in the living room facing towards the back working my way from left to right towards the slide out.
LAYOUT: I offset each plank by Β½ its length (2 ft) and chose planks from across multiple boxes to alternate the plank wood grain design.
CUTTING: Cutting this material is very easy. Using a straight edge, score along the cut line with a utility knife and snap it off.
ASSEMBLY: The vinyl planks snap together from left to right and front to back. I followed the instructions to assemble them. The ends often needed to be hammered into place with a rubber mallet. When done, there is almost no visible seam between planks.
TRIM: I picked up new trim pieces to dress up the edges along the walls. Some were painted to match the wall color. I was able to match the cabinet color so no painting the ones next to the cabinets. In water sensitive areas (bathroom), I put a very small bead of silicon under the trim before driving a few finishing nails in.
STAIR AND CAB TRANSITIONS
I picked up some 90 degree aluminum transition pieces and cut them to size with a Dremmel and hacksaw. Then I nailed them into the flooring to secure them.
CHALLENGES
Cutting custom pieces to fit around the entry stairs and through the bathroom door took a bit of time to get just right. Other than that, there were no real problems. I took my time and planned out each row before laying it down.

This video helped me out so much!! We are doing the same to our 27ft bumper pull, thank you so much! Helps tremendously!
Hey Tito, did you leave any space for expansion from walls and other areas?
Just curious on how is the floor holding up after these 4 years. Also do you take it to lakes and mountains where it could come loose at the seams.
wow, you did a very good job. thanks for video.
I noticed you didnβt use extra adhesive. I have heard those lift a lot. Have you had any lifting?
What is the name of the product that you used
Nice job
Stupid question, but how do the floorboards stick? Do they stick or do you just push them so close there is no opening so they can't move?
The floor looks great!
Do you remember the color name of the paint you used? And how is it holding up?
Thank you.
Well, you have a new subscriber hereβ¦ great job! I will take you as my guide for the renovation Iβm about to start on the flooring of my Fleetwood Revolution 40 LE. Could you please send me a list of tools that I will need? Iβm sure there will be more questions but this is good for starters, thanks
How well do these tiles adhere to the floor without adhesive? I would think that driving down the road and the body of the RV flexing they would pop up.
The flooring came out amazing! I am about to undertake this project, did you end up having any issues without the expansion gaps? Would like to avoid using the side trim needed to cover the expansion gaps!
You made the same mistake many other "Youtubbers" made, no underlayment to allow separate movement between the finish floor and the subfloor. Those thin sheets have a very important purpose. Temperature changes are going to move the floor and subfloor at different rates and directions and adhering directly to the subfloor pulls the finish floor apart.
Great work. Thank you for your time and effort to make this video and share your knowledge and experience with us. Greetings from Croatia.
What ruler tool for angles did you use?
Looks awesome , I did the floor in our old Itasca with lament but will use the vinyl for our Hurricane. Thanks
Can you list all the tools you used when doing this? π
Impressive! If the weather is starting to cool down wherever you are, and you'd like a free vacation to sunny Arizona, we've got a place for you to stay and a job we need your expertise on! My father passed away 2 weeks ago, right before we were planning to start some flooring repairs in his Class A RV so he could put it on the market. He was, like you, able to literally do/fix anything. I just hope I absorbed enough of his genius to begin to tackle some of his unfinished projects. I enjoyed watching this video! Reminded me of Dad.
I have a class A 27β Sightseer with a slide and want to do the same you did, but the question is what am I going to get involved with in replacing the carpet under the slide with vinyl flooring. Donβt want to remove slide to get at whatβs under it, but want to do a perfect installation. Any suggestions as where I get more information on it. Your YouTubes are excellent.
Very nice, I am going to start my project soon
You are a blessing.Keep up the good work
Hey Brian
Some installers have suggested glueing down these floors as movement of the rv can make the seams pop. Did you have any issues?
This looks fantastic! Watching in 2022 and I am curious how it held up. Did driving the RV make the tiles shift at all?
Looks really nice
Great video Iβm tackling the same thing your video will be a great help. Love your beautiful new flooring
Of course I had to see the completed flooring project as you hooked me with the earlier one. Very nice and though if we buy the class b tomorrow which is going on 23 years old American Cruiser 2000RE 1999 year. But suppose to have had most of the carpet replaced with similar vinyl planks but back end floor across from Bathroom has some spongy parts. Explains why it hasn't sold perhaps in the past 4 or so weeks and price dropped 5,000 too. They sent photos and overall looks good outside with little to no damage to the unit visually. But there is no longer steps and those would be on the end where the flooring has issues. So hubby thinks perhaps someone wrecked the steps by backing into something and it also caused some under flooring damage. Meantime seeing how a fridge vent might leak and that means other vents too..these A-cruisers have floor AC units that also have outside vents that you need to open during use it's another possible leak point of course. Also that end has the grey & black tanks too. All things helpful to know and I'm collecting as much info as possible. I'm in my 70's and though my husband of 50 years is extremely handy he's showing his age too. And it 's not his thing. I'm essentially buying an older RV to upgrade finally from tenting. However I loved tent camping and it's bitter sweet to think it's time to give it up. I don't want to buy an older unit with issues that we can't fix and fix well. Have had no luck finding one that's in top shape due to our rural location it's hard to get to one before it's snapped up as my narrowed down choices are also coveted my many others. Lots of competition for these smaller 21' and under Class B & B+'s. I know yours is a C but no doubt similar situations shared between B's and C's. Thanks again. I'm looking forward to watching your other RV DIY's.
Great job !
Thank you so much for showing this video step by step! My husband and I just bought an older RV that needs a major facelift on the inside! And pulling the carpet out and putting vinyl or laminate flooring is the top on the list!
Hey Brian, I hope you are doing well. After watching your video on replacing the flooring several times, and making my wife watch it too, I convinced her that we could do it too. We are almost finished laying down the planks and will start the putting down the molding tomorrow. Thankfully my wife isn't going to divorce me but she said I can't watch your "how to" videos anymore! I'm just kidding but it really is a big job and I'm no master craftsman like you. But I do have a question for you. The instructions that came with my planks said to start with the tongue to the wall. I thought I noticed that you started with the tongue away from the wall. If so, do you think that's a better way to start? Oh, and do you have any how to videos on how to get rid of the scratch mark in the new flooring from the slide? Thanks for all your great videos!
Looks really good! Nice work. Iβm about to start mine now ππΌππΌππΌ
The flooring looks fantastic. . It gives the RV a fresh new look. I might just do the same to get rid of the old vinyl flooring.
What is the tool called that you used at about 6:42 mark? It is the tool that helped you make that angle cut. Thanks for your video it is very helpful.
How long did it take to put tile down
Great job! In a house they told me to leave about 1/4β at the walls for expansion. Yours looks like it is right to the walls. Did you see any problems?
What did you use for the small baseboard trim?? Great job! Thank you
Ok, so it looks great, how does it hold up to the weather as it is a floating floor, how much weight do you think you added and how well does it work with your slide, I have rollers one one side the other side slides across a plastic plate. Looking at replacing ours, I pulled up the carpet but have not made a decision to put peel and stick over the existing linoleum or pull it up and do a floating floor or glue the planks down I definitely want to do vinyl plank but still working out all the kinks
How sharp can your simple cutter be. I have 2 box cutters and I cannot cut a straight line and when I snap it the finish comes off.
