Certified Mobile RV Technician, Darren Koepp, troubleshoots a Dometic RV refrigerator that is not working on propane. In this instance, the electrode wire was damaged and shorting out and therefore the burner was unable to ignite.

  • Thank you Daren!

  • Mine was not cooling well one minute and cooling fine the next. During the night running on propane I noticed i heard the pulsing like it tried to ignite on about 3-4 occasions through out the night. Also we noticed at times their was no heat coming from the rear of the fridge not sure if that’s normal or not. Do these things shut off if it’s cold enough then reignite or does it do it just the first time you turn them on? It was about 40’s with the windows open that night if it matters. This thing is new and only about a year old. It really shouldn’t be having issues already.

  • Good Afternoon, Sir. I have a Dometic RM-1350. Works on AC but not propane “E-1” error. The gas flows when disconnected. , gas valve and solenoid is okay per 9volt battery test. Rest on flue is in. , manual valve open under solenoid. I have disconnected the wires on reset and when replaced igniter actuated but no light. No igniter when disconnect AC power plug for fridge. I do hear a relay. Is all that left the circuit board?. It’s a 385100502. Thank you.

  • That was awesome.! Thank you soo much. My domestic fridge in our new to us (1988 citation) isn't working on either electric or gas (bought it that way). It does however make fridge noises when turned to electric but still not cooling. I'm thinking it needs a new one 😆 but still cant wait to check points you showed here. Thank you for making it seem easy to a newbie!

  • greetings….i was told that an 8cu ft fridge uses about 1400 BTUs of propane an hour. My question is this; is that when it is running continuously, or does it use less because the thermostat comes on for awhile, and then off for a while…thanks for any help

  • much appreciated, it educated me and gave me the guts to check further and try to diagnose my problem! thumbs up!

  • The unit works fine on electric. What if the gas flame is present, the fridge cools but, won't maintain the cold on LP gas. What next?

  • Darren, great videos, question the little window on the peep hole for the fridge LP burner should it be open or closed, if open how much? What’s it’s function…ty

  • Thank you so much for your videos. I was able to repair my dometic refrigerator myself and saved tons of money!

  • Would have taken me a year to figure out by myself. Yhank you.

  • Where or how to go to your site to boy stuffed

  • I found it helpful to have an overview/summary of the sequence of what happens to start the flame: 1. a control unit, 2. activates ignition module, 3. generates spark & 4. opens gas valve, and flame then lights to 5. satisfy the flame being lit via ionization probe at the burner so the spark stops. Getting this from John B.: Ideal Boiler Function + . . . In addition to the VERY good videos at MYRVWORKS about how to check the various components made a big difference to me. ALSO: I suspect some of the online manuals may be a bit out of date because my Dometic 8501 on a 2018 R-Pod 179 has a Polyswitch showing Typ: P870 rather than the P860 and the display on front of the refrig is different. Gas burner lighting processes are very similar whether water tank heating, furnace, or refrigerator. Darren is my favorite RV expert!!!

  • Thank you I know why my gas going to my refrigerator not working

  • Hey Bro-fessor Koepp, you're a gentleman and a scholar! You put out the very best of educational videos of any kind on the planet. Hands stinking down! You belong on national TV brother! Your work and productions are very much appreciated.

  • Sir,
Great video. You obviously know your stuff. I have a Dometic RM2354 that is not cooling in any mode. Lights on the control panel are normal just will not cool. I popped the cover off the lower control board and found a blue wire coming off the top right plug that is not connected to anything. I could send a picture but not sure how to post that here. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  • My fridge works fine for awhile, but than it konks out and takes a while for it to work again. What could the problem be?

  • I wanted to buy new bulp for inside the fridge which was not there, so I measured the distance between conectors and now the fridge is completely death. Not doing anything, at all. Can I broke it when measure the contacts even when the fridge was off?

  • Great video. My electrode wire is fine and flame looks good but I’m getting about 20 “clicks” and then the flame/propane shuts off. Thinking the signal from the electrode back to the board is not recognizing a sustained flame. Any help/ideas are appreciated. Thx

  • Do you recommend having a portable 12v compressor backup fridge in the event the RV fridge ceases operation when Boondocking? If yes what features would you recommend?

  • I have a TT with a propane/electric refrigerator. My question is… Why is my AC just electric? They both make colder temperatures.

  • I always learn something. There is a magic when someone shares a point of view or makes you think a thought you've never thought before… I've never considered the drip line being a LEAK to the outside before. If I had a 10mm – 15mm hole in the front of my fridge door, you better believe I'd plug it.

  • What a great tip on that reset button, i went 3 days trying everything including ordeing a new board. All i had to do is press that reset switch on the burner. Thank You Thank You

  • This would have been a lot more entertaining if he would have grabbed that wire. 😒

  • While replacing the element it broke off inside the tube! What would be the easiest way to get it out?

  • Such a ridiculous fault, this is bad choice by the manufacturer for not protecting the wire properly. It's as though they want these unescesary faults to occur.

  • Mine won't work on electric either, won't even turn on. Mine is old with no lights to tell temp etc.

  • Thanks for sharing! You helped me troubleshoot my fridge!

  • SAME EXACT UNIT ON AMAZON FOR 199.98. Not to mention the free 40 watt solar panel will take 3 days to charge this.. what a scam.
