Understanding RV Electrical!
The RV electrical setup can be a complicated thing. I hope this is a good starting point for those interested in RV Electrical. There are so many ways to customize it to fit your needs but this is a good starting point to begin with a few recommendations that might really help those starting off in RVing.

I only have 30amp according to the type of plug. How would one upgrade to a split 50amp? I'm converting 37ft rv into a tiny home for permanent living. The electrical company is going set up a 100amp box for me for the rv.
The new Ford SD trucks are isolated as well. When the truck is running it charges the trailer batteries but when the truck is off it does not scavenge off the truck batteries.
Need a video of how the inverter works and how to know it’s working correctly,
Good stuff!
Awesome video, very well presented. Great job
Great video, but split phase IS single phase. Sorry to be pedantic but that is something that gets confused by a lot of people.
I plan on using a 21 Jayco Bungalow (50amp electrical plug in) as a permanent residence for about 5 years at a house. I will have a 50amp plug in installed with a 30 Amp and 20 Amp at the house. That being said, do I have to have batteries to run the Bungalow if it will be permanently plugged in? Or do the converters need batteries to send the power to DC related systems?
Thank you and stay safe,
Your channel is amazing.
Wow so much info😊 do u do this for a living or for fun❤️
Dang this was complete, now I just got to find my electrical system manual to see which of these items my system is missing.
Great job explaining the electrical system in an RV! I learned a lot
Question: when connecting to a shore line in an RV park for an overnight stay and not unhooking the trailer, does the truck to trailer electrical cable needs to be unplugged?
Do you understand what a shunt is for?
What’s going on, if when connected to the RV trailer, it drains the truck battery?
Ensure emc device.. looking into. Thank u
Note Lithium batteries must be in temperate zone. They can catch fire if temperature drops too low.
Mostly good stuff. I would caution to never attach a 30A cord/RV to a 50A outlet via an adapter. If shorted, the cord can melt before the 10awg wire before the breaker trips.
A 2pole 50A breaker provides only 50 amps total (two phase not "split" phase") … You do not have 100 amps the cord will not support 100 amps.
Otherwise, pretty good stuff, thank you.
This was superbly explained. I just got a van ready for "Camper conversion" it has all the electrical components. They were originally installed professionally but some of them are now disconnected. I am trying to figure out how things work as I want to relocate the cables and components. Unfortunately the seller had no idea how it works.
With this videos (and searching the manuals for each of the components) I will try to make sense of it all. At least now I know the names and functions of the components 🙂 and I can start making the diagram of the "how it should be" and match it with how it is.
In case I get lost, anyone knows what kind of electrician/Mechanic can help me make sense of the system? Having a diagram will help me lots.
Questions??????
When I plug my trailer into a campground it trips the the 110 plug on the pedestal? Any thoughts.
I’m using a 30 amp plug with a 110 adapter.
Hey hey! I'm confused. I wanted to connect my rv to a home outlet, i connected a 110 to 30amp dogbone then my surge protector, turned on breaker, green and blue light on, good. Connected one of two 10 gauge ext cord, breaker on again, green light and blue on, good. Connected other 10 gauge ext power cord, breaker back on, green blue still showing, good. Connected to rv, breaker back on, surge protector show reverse polarity??
Good morning. I have setup my lion energy battery bank utilizing the manual switch. All seems to function well except the AC#2 which is powered in position 1 by the hot leg that does not go through the multiplus. Turning it on causes the multiplus to shut down after 15 to 30 seconds. Then both turn back on and the cycle repeats. I this is while AC#1 is off. There is no issue with running AC#1 on its own which is the hot leg through the multiplus. Any ideas? Thanks
Just started watching your videos since I just purchased my first camper. Appreciate the tips!
One minor correction to your video is 240v is still considered single phase. It is 2 phases but is still not called 2 phase or split phase. It’s just single phase
Can you please come and get me set up like yours? Hahaha ughhhh I wish I knew how to do this kind of stuff. This is so outside of my realm of knowledge! I just bought a 20 year old class C. I would love to have something like this!!
The ill-fated face electrophoretically reply because edge alternately dislike anenst a rough knee. snobbish, yellow grasshopper
This has been so very helpful.
Is it possible to have a battery set up including solar and , bun-docking for 2 consecutive weeks without limiting the electrical use ? What would be THE BEST set up on an RV B or C model? Thank you very much. I’m tying to learn as much as possible before buying the RV. Any suggestions? For 2 people .
Hey , enjoy your channel, appreciate info. Can you tell me why the single phase supplies only 30 amp ? Seems if a double leg carries 100, a single with 50 would be a big benefit as far as running many appliances at the same time.
Thanks! What size wire would we use to install a 50 amp outlet for our RV at home?
I'm wanting to run a 12V battery bank. I just purchased a 2021 forest river salem 26DBUD. Do I simply add another 12v in parallel? Or do I need a new converter?
I bought a 1987 Fleetwood regal I later discovered the wires from the battery have been cut I don't know which wire is hot and ground
You are an excellent teacher. Glad I found your site.
I am planing to buy a grand design reflection 303 rls 5th wheel. It comes with one battery (not sure what type) and a converter. If I want to boondock at a walmart for one night but want to watch tv and plug in and use my desktop computer for 5 hours straight, what kind of power upgrade would I need? (Not sure if I would be allowed to run a portable gen)
fantastic
I just recently got a 1993 Fleetwood Bounder Double Axle, and everything was working fine, three days ago the batteries went dead so I took a closer look at the hood, and noticed the battery connections, the hood has 3 batteries, two deep cycle and one start battery(note theres two solar cells on the roof wired to one of the cabin batteries) but im not sure how its all wired. I know the motor only needs one 12v start battery and the cabin needs 2 or more deep cycle batteries and im aware that the solar cells need a storage battery. If someone that can help would be great!
