A goal of ours is to visit all of Utah’s “Mighty Five” National Parks. Arches and Canyonlands were already checked off the list and now we can check off Capitol Reef National Park as well.
Capitol Reef is home to the first arch we’ve ever seen that hikers are allowed to walk out onto, so despite the strenuous hike up to it we knew we had to see it. There is an interesting legend behind this arch’s name. Apparently, the famous bank and train robber Butch Cassidy maintained a hideout in Capitol Gorge near this arch in the late 1800’s.
While visiting Capitol Reef we also rolled down the 20-mile Scenic Drive, saw the park’s namesake feature Capitol Dome, and marveled at Panorama Point at sunset.
