Canon EOS R6 and 1DX Mark III get C-Log 3 and dual-card recording in new firmware

Canon has released a pair of new firmware updates for the Canon EOS R6 and the Canon EOS 1DX Mark III. And while the features they bring aren’t unexpected for a camera like the 1DX Mark III, they’re a welcome surprise for the EOS R6 that seems to be Canon announcing that the EOS R6 is classed as a serious professional camera.

While both firmware updates contain fixes for their respective bodies, both of them add two new features to both cameras. First, they get the ability to shoot video in Canon Log 3, but now they’re also both able to shoot video to two cards simultaneously, letting you make your backups as you go.

As well as adding the new features, the v1.4 update for the EOS R6 fixes a number of issues users had experienced, including issues with the HDMI connection as well as problems with stabilisation and general operation with specific long lenses.

Firmware Version 1.4.0 incorporates the following enhancements and fixes:

  1. Adds [Canon Log 3] to [Canon Log settings].
  2. Simultaneous movie recording on card 1 and card 2 has been added.
  3. Improves operation stability when using the RF400mm F2.8 L IS USM and RF600mm F4 L IS USM.
  4. Fixes an issue in which, during HDMI connection, if the camera’s screen turns off, a zebra pattern is displayed via the HDMI output.
  5. Fixes an issue in which sufficient image stabilization effects may not be attained immediately after the start of shooting.

For the EOS 1DX Mark III, Canon seems to be laying the groundwork for future Cinema RAW developments that will come to the camera and Canon’s Digital Photo Professional software. Likewise, you’ll get the simultaneous card recording, although you can’t shoot raw movies on both cards at the same time. Hopefully, you’ll be able to at least shoot proxies to the second card.

Firmware Version 1.5.0 incorporates the following enhancements and fix:

  1. Adds [Canon Log 3] to [Canon Log settings].
    • Support for RAW movies shot with Canon Log 3 and RAW (Light) will be available in a future version of Cinema RAW Development and in Digital Photo Professional software.
    • Support for the processing of RAW movies shot with Canon Log 3 and the application of Viewing LUT will be available in a future version of Digital Photo Professional software.
  2. Simultaneous movie recording on card 1 and card 2 has been added, however RAW movies and RAW(Light) movies cannot be recorded simultaneously on card 1 and card 2.
  3. Support for the VPG 400(Video Performance Guarantee Profile), a standard based on the CFexpress 2.0 specification, has been added.
  4. Fixes an issue in which there are rare instances where the shooting settings for Still Photo mode are retained when a user switches to Movie mode.

Both firmware updates are available to download from the Canon website now. You can find EOS R6 firmware v1.4.0 here and EOS 1DX Mark III firmware v1.5.0 here, for both Windows and Mac.
