Photo Of The Day By Yvonne Baur
Todayâs Photo Of The Day is âThe Last Lava Sunriseâ by Yvonne Baur. Location: Hawaiâi Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii.
âWhen I headed out that morning to shoot the lava flow high on a cliff just outside Hawaiâi Volcanoes National Park, I didnât know that it would be the last time Iâd see the 61g lava flow,â explains Baur. âIt was the end of April 2018 and the flow had retreated high on the Pali, so it involved a long hike to get there. I started at 4 a.m. and did the roughly 5.5 miles trek in the dark. My hope was to be next to the surface flow around sunrise. The flow had retreated an additional mile since the day before, so I had to hurry up the steep cliff to be there on time. I made it just in time and enjoyed an insane sunrise at the lava with nothing else around me but shallow earthquakes every few minutes. Just a few days later the area was shut down due to increased seismic activity, and soon after, the eruption in Leilani Estates, which was my old neighborhood, happened. Iâm glad I had that one more trip out to the lava and it didnât disappoint at all.â
