Sony’s new “Visual Story” app for iOS creates AI-curated galleries for wedding and event photographers

Sony has launched a new Visual Story app for iOS aimed squarely at wedding and event photographers. Or at least, ones that shoot Sony cameras. It allows for easy editing, gallery creation, cloud storage and web delivery solutions to get your images to your clients as quickly as possible.

Visual Story is a free app for Sony & iOS users. It utilises automated image transfer from compatible Sony mirrorless cameras to the cloud, after which users can instantly edit and deliver digital albums to their clients. And to help you with camera metadata and image selection, it uses AI to help pick your best images.

The goal of the app, Sony says, is to help wedding and event photographers streamline their workflow. After all, who doesn’t like efficiency? And it’s got AI to help you along with a big chunk of it.

The AI will help you sift through the images to help you find your keepers. It also sorts them based on different types of images including cake and ring ceremony, speeches, first dances, etc. It’s also able to spot if a subject’s eyes are closed and discard them. And if you’re using multiple cameras and second shooters, it can sort them based on the camera that created them, too.

Sony also says that with the app, “photographers can now deliver a fully edited and curated photo gallery instantly, on site and on the day of the big event – eliminating days of work”. I have to be honest, I’m not sure I know any wedding photographers that would trust their editing work to the colour of their iPhone screen.

Maybe quick edits to deliver a slideshow to play on a screen at the reception after the wedding is over, but certainly not for final prints.

The Visual Story app for iOS is available to download free from the App Store and is compatible with the Sony A7C, A7R IV, A7S III, A9 and A9 II. The Sony A7 III will also see support with a firmware update coming in Spring 2021. There’s been no mention of an Android version yet. Find out more on Alpha Universe.
