Pelosi Stands By Swalwell Amidst Chinese Spy Scandal
During her weekly press conference on Thursday, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) stood by Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA), saying that he should still be able to serve in Congress despite his past ties to a suspected Chinese spy.
âI donât have any concern about Mr. Swalwell,â Pelosi said, according to Fox News.
She went on to fire back at House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who has publicly demanded answers on whether or not Pelosi was aware that China was trying to infiltrate Swalwellâs office when she put him on the House Intelligence Committee back in January of 2015.
Pelosi claimed today that leaders from both the Republican and Democratic parties were briefed âat the same momentâ in the spring of 2015 about a suspected Chinese spy targeting members of Congress.
âIn terms of Mr. Swalwell â in the spring of 2015, the leadership of the House and the [Intelligence] Committee were informed that overtures from a Chinese person were being made to members of Congress,â she said. âWhen that was made known to the members of Congress, it was over.â
âl do think that itâs unfortunate that Mr. McCarthy is trying to make an issue of this when we all found out at the same time,â Pelosi added.
She then accused McCarthy of trying to deflect attention from the fact that he has QAnon in his delegation over there.â
âThat, I think, is a danger, in terms of our debate here about, you know, what the possibilities are for undue influence to members of Congress,â Pelosi said

Later in the press conference, Pelosi was asked if background checks are necessary for all staff and interns given the fact that the suspected spy placed at least one intern in Swalwellâs office.
âI donât know that it means that we have background checks for every intern who comes into the Capitol,â Pelosi replied.
This came one day after Pelosiâs spokesman Drew Hammill said that she is confidant that he can remain on the Intelligence Committee, which has access to classified materials.
âThe Speaker has full confidence in Congressman Swalwellâs service in the Congress and on the Intelligence Committee,â Hamill said.
