A scientist discovers a formula enabling him to pass through solid surfaces, but he also rapidly ages, which forces him to kill humans in order to reverse the aging process by absorbing his victims’ energies. —nufs68

The 4-D Man is Robert Lansing, who through a sped-up atomic fusion experiment is possessed with the ability to walk through solid matter. Motivated by greed and jealousy, Lansing uses his powers for his own selfish gain. But there’s a catch: his “4-D” prowess is causing him to age rapidly and to deteriorate physically. After a powerhouse opening, 4-D Man settles into a conventional “there are some things man is not meant to know” mode; it also closes with that wearisome cliched “The End?” title. Otherwise, the film is a laudable effort to do a lot with a limited special-effects budget.

Synopsis: Spoilers?
Electrodynamics scientist Tony Nelson (James Congdon) experiments with the fourth dimension, a dimension defined as the intermingling of atoms so they take up the same space at the same time, by attempting to push a wooden pencil into a steel block with the aid of a radiated force field. His experiments, although briefly successful, result in a fire that destroys his laboratory.

After his boss fires him, Tony is forced to visit the Fairview Research Center, where his brother Scott (Robert Lansing) leads a team of physicists struggling to perfect cargonite, an impenetrable metal. Although the brothers have quarreled in the past, the staid Scott welcomes Tony and introduces him to the woman he plans to marry, his assistant, Linda Davis (Lee Meriwether). Tony is entranced by Linda but, trying to deny his attraction to her, refuses her suggestion that he stay in Fairview and work alongside Scott. Over the next few days, however, Scott, absorbed in his work, leaves the two alone frequently, and one day they find themselves in an embrace, although Tony soon tears himself away.

The next day, Scott’s group exposes carbonite to radiation in order to prove that it cannot be destroyed, but the experiments fail. In his frustration, Scott continually checks the metal, exposing himself to radiation.

Plot: Spoilers?
A brilliant but irresponsible scientist, Dr. Tony Nelson, develops an electronic amplifier that he hopes will allow any object to achieve a 4th dimensional (4D) state. While in this state, any object can pass freely through any other object. Tony, however, fails to pay attention to the overload, which sparks an electrical fire that burns down his lab. This results in the university terminating his contract. Now unemployed, Tony seeks out his brother, Scott, also a Ph.D., to help him with his experiment. Scott is a researcher working on a material called Cargonite that is so dense that it is impenetrable.

Scott is underpaid and unappreciated at his new job. He does not have the necessary drive to ask his employer, Mr. Carson, for greater recognition. Scott has become the driving force behind the development of Cargonite, named after Carson, who is now taking much of the credit for Scott’s work. When his girlfriend, Linda Davis, falls for Tony, an enraged Scott steals Tony’s experiment and starts playing around with it, eventually transforming himself into a 4D state. When demonstrating this to Tony, Scott leaves the amplifier power turned off, yet he successfully passes his hand through a block of steel. Scott can now enter a 4D state via his own will. Tony is amazed but warns Scott not to reveal this ability until he can further test for possible side effects.
