We’ve seen some confusion regarding the basic fundamentals of RV water tanks – the types of water, issues with the toilet, etc. So we thought we’d go BACK TO BASICS with a video that covers the core fundamentals. Let’s call it “Adventures with RV Toilets!” Or maybe not…

AFFILIATE LINK DISCLOSURE: Friends, making a quality Loloho video is kind of like making sausage – only slightly more violent. It’s a ridiculous amount of work that typically involves high dollar camera drops, blue-screen-of-death computer crashes, and at least one angry shotgun wielding old man shouting, “Hey! Get the hell outta here!” Once the final video is posted, rewards here on YouTube are few and far between (unless you are a masochist who enjoys being verbally abused by anonymous trolls). One saving grace is our affiliate links. JUST CLICKING THESE LINKS HELPS TO SUPPORT OUR LITTLE SHOW. Think of this clicking as like tipping – except that it doesn’t cost you anything extra! If you eventually make a purchase via one of our affiliate links, we will receive a few pennies (and Sean typically invests these pennies in duct tape and video gear). Again, it doesn’t cost you anything to click these links, and it’s a great help to us. As always, safe travels, happy camping, and THANK YOU!

  • Just watched your segment on water and water conservation; and, Sean's mention of the "navy shower" reminded me of my late father's story. He was in WWII and shipped out of the West coast heading for Brisbane, Australia. Needless to say, water was at a premium aboard ship. So they were allowed 2 containers of water day for showering and shaving. He said he was able to get it down to one container for showering and shaving; and, one container for drinking. 😁

  • Here is a tip that I got from my dad,if you can't get access to RV tank treatments , put a quart of buttermilk in your black tank. This will help keep the natural enzymes going.

  • 2023 – I realize this video is 4 years ago but found it very helpful as we begin experimenting with boondocking and dry camping. We’re taking a trip in March and while at the RV campground we may just dry camp and do a one or two day experiment to start assembling our numbers and see where we’re at. Thanks for the info in the video!

  • My kitchen faucet turns on by itself due to gravity pulling the handle down as we travel!

  • This is an incredibly useful videos for us noobs. Thank you so much!

  • We are newbies and there is so much to learn. I don’t want to learn by trial and error 😁

  • Definitely a Newbie here. I assume you would fill up the water heater tank when you fill up the fresh water tank. My question is: Does the water heater tank keep enough water in it while depleting the fresh water tank? If someone could explain how that works.

  • How do I find out how big my tanks are? Just purchased a used rv and I don't see the info in the manual.

  • Sean…your title says Bookdocking??? Should be BOONDOCKING. 🙂

  • I'm getting a bathing suit for my teen to wear to shower outside with the outdoor shower…day 1 and gray water already 3/4 full ! 😲

  • PG-63 😄 Also, great idea on using leave in conditioner instead. You're a genius!

  • I’m new to this and I’m learning how to do all this. I have my RV parked in my kids yard. If I hook up the hose for water, do I put it in through city water or fresh water? And how do I add a filter to the hose to make sure I have clean water to drink?

  • Good evening! These are some great tips that will continue to linger through time. Ha…we will be almost exclusively boondocking. So, we need to do some Boondcocking 101 schooling. No doubt, that will result in "Well….I guess the tanks are full and we are going to have to leave now" at greater occurrences than we'd like initially.

    Safe travels!

  • Hi guys, I do a lot of birdbathes indoors of course and wash my hair outside in a basin with heated water in the kettle. Love doing this under the tall evergreens! I don’t use my shower too much moisture in my 21 ft trailer. But I certainly could.

  • Thank you for this video. Helpful for us newly retired Newbies. Glad that you are not silly in your videos.

  • Wow as a newbie, this was great information. I plan to start dry camping and needed some serious info. This did the trick and I am really grateful!

  • Thank you, thank you. Just bought an RV last week, have no idea what I am doing, lol. So many more bells and whistles than my camper van. Super helpful video.

  • Your video is very helpful. Thanks a ton! My husband and I are now on a RV trip through the Rocky Mountains and forests of BC and Alberta and we are loving it. Our first RV trip together. Thanks for all your great tips. Very helpful! abngntjriughbrhe

  • I USE THE BIO-GEO METHOD / I LIKE IT / YOU TUBE TR BOWLIN

  • We use 40 mule team borax in our black and grey tanks. It is a natural surfactant and water softener to it helps break up 'stuff'. It converts to hydrogen peroxide when dissolved in warm water so it can disinfect and kill odors. It can help with laundry and dish soaps. Lot's of uses. Easy on seals. Can deodorize inside fridge just like baking soda.
Don't forget length of showers also limited by hot water capacity and recovery rate for your water heater. If you run out of hot water you're taking too long. We can get 3 adults to shower one right after another with our 10 gal. electric/ gas WH.
Most outdoor showers have pump switch so don't forget to check it before breaking camp.
Had problem no water shortly after hookup. Dx algae from improperly stored potable water hose over winter first camp of spring. looked like spinach. Intake strainers got it but carry spares. Next, be familiar with strainer protecting water pump and practice cleaning/ changing. Learn if have diverter valve for winterization/ drain. Some pressure reducing valves can malfunction and prohibit >40 psi into camper. Change filters as needed and check often.
I like your previous idea using the wash basin for dishes.
Good stuff as usual from LLHm

  • Our 1995 Airstream test monitor toggle switch broke inside and it no longer works. Have you ever tried to disassemble that monitor panel to fix one of the toggles? If so, how did you do it. If not, what do you recommend?

  • My husband and I just want to say thank you for all your awesome and informative videos! We just bought a 29' 2005 RVision travel lite from a dealer and were terribly disappointed and frustrated that there was no manual in print or online available and the "walk through" at the dealership with our rookie salesman was a joke. He literally knew nothing about anything. We have learned so much through your videos!

  • When you are out boondocking, do you ever consider using truck stop showers and/or purchasing a national gym membership to help extend your water supply? I'm not saying it will work everywhere (how many Planet Fitness' are there between Dawson City and Whitehorse?) but in a lot of areas it seems it could really help.

  • I appreciate your matter-of-fact presentation style. It is pleasantly instructional without drifting into time-consuming entertainment. I've learned a lot from your videos. Thank you.

  • Still no water comes in into our RV following the instruction of turn the pump on and then the water.

  • A great discussion- trying dry camping for 3 days this coming weekend 🥂

  • Thank you! We are new to RVing and plan to boondock a lot. Prior, whenever we rented RVs we had hookups. So we never really experienced any of this. I assumed we would burn through electricity first so I thought we would need solar (we still might). But instead, we ran out of water super fast. All it took was one pre-teen taking a shower 😉

  • Great video – thank you! We're looking to get in to our first RV. Its very good to finally get an idea of approximately how long one can go dry camping without having to refill water and dump grey and black tanks. Couldn't find this info from all the other videos I've watched. Appreciated!

  • Remember to ad the installation of the water saving shower head.
