RV 101® – How To Sanitize the RV Water System Using Regular Household Bleach
It’s a good idea to sanitize the RV water system using regular household bleach when you take the RV out of storage, or anytime you notice an odor. Find out how it’s done In our RV how-to video. Caution: If you have an on-demand water heater with a copper heat exchanger, the water heater must be by-passed. Do not run chlorinated water through the water heater.

Thank you!
Thank you
Quick & simple for stupid! Thanks!
I can get 65 gallons in my travel trailer. 1 cup+ bleach doesn't seem like much bleach for that much water, I definitely can't smell bleach
I use chem strips like they use in swimming pools and hot tubs and you will be amazed at how much chlorine bleach is left behind once you stop smelling it
Great job! Short, sweet and to the point. Thanks for the help!
Should you run the bleach through your toilet too?!
Should I bypass the hotwater tank or fill it too?
I guess that depends on the hot water system you have. We have a Truma system. Never ever get bleach into the hot water tank. According to Truma, bleach will ruin the tank. Just always bypass the tank. These videos are just too generic for the industry.
12 hours!? Seriously? Thank you sir!
Thanks!
Thanks, very simple, to the point and helpful.
That was easy. Thanks!!
Straight to the point good job
I have used bleach in our system and left it in, and we don't drink the water. Just use it for toilet and washing dishes. RV salesman recommended we don't drink the water. He said think about the water sitting in your tank on hot days. Most of our camping we have water hookups but take bottled water for drinking, coffee making and cooking when we boondock.
2 cups…… hell NO! You know how hard it is to get that out…. 1 cup per 100 gals max… You also have it in the city water as well…. Love how you guys always show on a trailer…. coachs dont have water hookups like this…. its a hose only hook up and mine points up for the inlet in the wet bay. It have to be a bottle that an be inline with the water and sucked up when its getting filled.. find something that does that… Been looking for years and nothing out her on the market…
Bleach will corrode the stainless steel boiler. Do not use bleach use a recommended product.
A 2 and a half minute video that tells you everything you need to know..other vids would take an hour lol..
This video doesn't mention driving around with the tank half full like so many other videos are recommending. Is that really necessary? Doesn't seem to us that driving around would do much of anything.
Thank you 😊
Sounds like this has to be done at a place where you can drain your tanks. I would imagine filling and emptying the fresh water tank multiple fills up the gray tank. Did I miss something? Saw something about bypassing water heater. How do you do that?
My question is about the rubber things in your system. Will the bleach destroy the rubber? Thanks
Mark thanks for all your informative videos. …?? Unrelated to this video! I notice the hot water tank is beneath the refrigerator vent! Does hot air or heat go up this refrigerator vent. Refrigerator are sensitive to heat anyhow . Thoughts? Thanks you.
Is this solution supposed to go through the water heater, or should I bypass it?
RV Education 1 when I unscrewed my hose to pour in the solution, a nob stayed in that I thought was part of the hose. It's now not an opened whole. I can't pour my solution into the fresh water holding tank. I'm so frustrated! 🤔😡
Mark if you take a brand new RV'; (just off the showroom floor). and decide to sanitize your entire water system; why do you mix your bleach and water in one recpiticle, then pour the entire contents into the fresh water tank, then continue to fill it completely full. Why not delete the mixing and pour directly int othe tank the bleach then continue to fill the tank, while at the same time turning on your water pump (if you're at home and can do this) to run the water through the system? It seems that there are too many steps to what I would call an easy solution…. "getting rid of the middle man"…..
Ok, thank you! This was a lot easier. I don't have a truck to haul my 5th wheeler and I'm sure this is what I must do. Wish me the best!
Love your videos please keep them coming I've watched everyone probably twice if not three times lol I live in Canada Ontario I was forced to sell my house from an injury at work my little one is disability and she takes massive seizures we bought an RV 2004 Georgie boy pursuit and we're just living our life now and your videos have made it possible to help own and operate my Rv I just want to say thank you really you have me a life impact on me and I recommend your videos to everyone!!!
Not bypassing the hot water heater could be a rinsing problem. Fresh water tanks should be rinsed at least 2-3 times to remove the concentrated chlorine. The hot water heater would have to fill/refill that many times too in order to remove the concentrated chlorine adequately. I suggest bypassing the hot water heater during the sanitizing process and draining it separately since it is ultra-heated anyway with respect to microbial contaminants. In other words, once drained, the hot water heater's only nemesis is microbial, which is probably adequately contained by its intense heat.
What do you do if your RV has a built in water filter, and a water filter inside the fridge?
Great video mark.
Mark, I notice you used concentrated regular bleach instead of non-concentrated formula. What would you recommend if non-concentrated bleach is not available for the same size tank….? Just Curious? Thanks as always.
I just watched a video that says to NEVER use bleach in a RV water system. They claimed bleach will cause early failure of the rubber seals and the water pump. Any opinion on this??
