Simple Trick for Filling your Freshwater tank when Boondocking – Tips from Tom

If your off grid for a while and you need more water this is what we do to add more water to our tank without moving the rig.

Here is the Pump we bought – http://amzn.to/2hkpkiC
Collapsible 5-gal Jugs we use – http://amzn.to/2qyNxbn

A simple drill pump and chunk of hose will make your life much easier. We needed to do this because we could not fill our tank from a jug but even if your fresh water fill is on the outside of your rig using a pump will still make it much easier to transfer the water.

  • I already looked at those pumps and the 12 volt ones and it says right on the package not for potable water, otherwise I would have used them years ago

  • Just use a 2nd water pump with proper attachments for the inlet valve and flip on and presto you are now able to fill RV with water from jugs.

  • I don't think you're supposed to use that if you plan on cleaning any foods or drinking it. It says in the product details in all capital letters "NOT TO BE USED WITH POTABLE WATER".
I was looking to send some of these to a few villages that don't have running water along with some cordless drills and solar panels to be used as portable fresh water transfer pumps until I read that. I'm sure the ppl wouldn't care but I'm still looking for a drill pump that isn't made with material that could harm the due to the long term use that they would need them for. Might cause cancer idk just not going to risk having that on my conscience.

  • Why sit there holding a drill when you can get an electric pump then put a long cable on it to the battery hookup on your vehicle while the pump lays there doing it job so you dont have to hold the drill the whole time

  • Thank You, very useful when I am in the city in some Walmart parking lot or some grocery store, Late November in Canada,, Camping closed, zero outdoors, rainy, snowy, windy, and I want a hot shower. I buy a 2 x 5 Gallon Water Jug that I return when finish (I get my 10,00$ deposit back). I use to transfer in a smaller container and fill it with a funnel,,, Cold and wet oardeal.

  • If you use short hose on suction side and longer hose on outlet side it will pump twice as much water in same amount of time.

  • Sling a line over the roof, hang your supply tank above the water fill, then siphon down into the fill. You can walk away for a few minutes and do something else while it empties. Forget the drill and pump.

  • That drill pump requires grease which is not edible. It's unsafe to drink. If you're going to do this you MUST filter it before drinking.

  • Id recommend disassembling the pump first and remove all grease with soap and water the pump might not last as long. But will be clean

  • I tried a drill pump on the advice of this video and it did not work well at all. The pump burned up because it isn't self priming and can't lift water more than a few inches. I ended up getting a 12V DC sump pump for $95. While it's more expensive, it simply works, it's dead simple, and everyone who boondocks has a 12V DC battery.

  • Bad idea and you also need to be using a drinkable water hose. This pump will pit grease into your water.

  • Full of toxic grease…. I made this mistake the other day, and found my hose full of non-potable grease. DO NOT DO THIS. Milescraft specifically says that it is not save for potable water!

  • I always run a line from the winterizing suction to the RV fill and have a female hose end on it. It is a tight fit but will fit under most standard RV water inlets right beside the fill point. Then you can use you RV pump to suck water from your external tank and use another regular water hose from you RV outside faucet back to your water fill point. Works awesome. If you have a large 250-300 gallon IBC tote you can just pull directly from it to your camper. We do this went dry camping at races etc for several days.

  • going to try to do this at burning man next week, thank you!

  • Wouldn't A large funnel they sell at Auto stores for a few dollars work?
But this part is really cool. Also it would work if you're water pump broke and you needed to get water out of the fresh water holding tank say like if it were winter and you weren't using it. Etc etc

  • Remember the days we ALL drank water from ANY garden hose… Apparently you can't do that anymore or you will die… Thanks for the great idea! I think I am going to install a second simple 12V RV water pump and do it that way…

  • Pretty sure that green hose is not a food-grade hose…

  • This is bad advice. That drill pump has grease inside it and naturally that grease ends up in your fresh water tank. You shouldn’t be drinking tap water in any case, but doing this will make your water even more toxic to drink, as well as grease in your showers and dishwashing.

  • I used this exact drill pump and tested it before I hooked it up to the RV. Glad I did because it shot grease all over the place!! Don’t use it!! You will put grease into your water system. Turns out my RV water pump will suck water out of a bottle. Didn’t know that but it was a setting called ‘Contry fill’ on the valve body.

  • Always keep the water supply higher than the pump for more efficient operation.
