WELCOME TO RISE OF THE EDUCATED RV BUYER!
Join the RV Wingman, Alan Warren, as he visits with Zach Rininger of Forest River about the changes in the type of RV buyers that are coming into their dealership. Buyers during the pandemic might have been “out of their minds” with emotion, but it’s a totally different story today. RV buyers are perhaps smarter than ever. And it’s not a moment too soon!

Why is Lexus so successful? The reason was the first recall they had years ago did not want to inconvenience the customers so they called them up and said we have a recall we are bringing you a car. We’re gonna take your car and fix it bring back your car, clean and wash and hope everything goes great and sure enough they that’s what made Lexis so successful because of that one thing that did on the first recall. Think of the Rv dealers selling a nice RV and have a team of workers going out fixing it right away just think of all the business they would get? Because of customer service.
The best information People that know the know the the true RV dealers
Put fifty cent candy together with fifty cent toy and you have a ten dollar item. This has been the r v industry in a nutshell for the past thirty years. Lithium batteries, frames and the epoxy resin coated solar panels that donn the top of most r v's all last the same number of years. Why aren't the batteries built into the frames to save space? Why aren't the resin coated epoxy panels covering the slides? It's because they don't have to. They know consumers are too stupid to stop buying their garbage product.
Alan, I saw that dealers (CW) were getting overloaded last year. An independent dealership in VA was going under and CW rushed in and snapped up all of their inventory. CW decided to dump the whole lot on one dealer in NC. I went there and found the lot so packed you could not open the slide out(s) on any rv, especially motorhomes. I also saw that they had quite a few rookie salespersons. I turned the tables and sought out the youngest one. He started with a motorhome that I am sure the dealership wanted off the lot. A 2017 Newmar Dutch Star $133,000. It looked bright and shiny, but after having them pull it out (failed on first try on starting it…Dead Battery!) New one put in and the slide sounded bad. 2 strikes. The final strike was the mileage, 42,000. I pointed him toward a 2015 Georgetown and told him to pull it out. I could tell from the start that he was not experienced with a motorhome. I wanted to plug it up to check out all appliances. He said they did not have a place to plug in so I said no problem we will use the generator. He didn't know it had one and opened half the compartments before finding it. I primed and started it up. He was amazed. All electrical and plumbing checked out along with the propane components. I asked to test drive it. He had to ask his supervisor if it was o.k. I went with him and overheard the conversation. Summary, they need to move units off the lot. I and the salesman took it for a 3 mile run. First thing I noticed was the mileage 7,400!!! The ride was good. I asked him why the mileage was so low. He probably told me info he wasn't suppose to divulge. The previous (original) owners were local and bought it when they were 72 years old. They only went camping locally and felt they were getting too old to continue.. I kept a poker face and said that they will need to work on the price, $113,000. I pointed out the tires had aged out (2014) and the side wipers needed to be replaced. I told them I also had a very clean excellent condition 2013 Salem Ultralite to trade in. All negotiations completed (NO ESP, NO PREP FEE, NO DELIVERY FEE) $55,600. My motto, be as smart or smarter than the person you are dealing with.
Perhaps I should open a repair shop, thus avoiding national chain facilities
Aren't 2024 models coming out in July? So the 2022's will be two model years old, and the 2023's will then be "last years' model" like 2022's are today? Seems like we will have this discussion again in the fall once the current camping/RV season has peaked this year.
Alan, do you have a preferred list of RV Inspectors? I have been searching but it's hard to know if that is a quality service or not.
Alan I think the Rockwood is a nice trailer. Well built for a slammed together RV. Most are slammed together.
CARFAX. The company should give you a Carfax printout of anything that's happened to the vehicle, be it a wreck or in a flood. ALWAYS put the VIN into Carfax before you sign anything. If they refuse to give you one or charge you money for it, walk away.
Having companies tell you that they are honest is funny. It's the people who have had to deal with them that will tell you the truth, not the dealership. Dealerships are not trustworthy. Like drug dealers, they cannot be trusted. They are only in it for the money.
My advice, stay away from Camping world. They sold me a trailer with a cemented black water tank, and it was leaking and molded all my clothing. They took advantage of my ignorance and I suspect they all do. We the consumer have to be smart and not buy things based on emotion.
I want to buy one because I can't afford to live anywhere. Plus, I am old and disabled and want to use this part of my life for fun. Motorhomes are not made for people in wheelchairs.
Thank you, I sure hope there are some good folks out there. My opinion, Camping World is not a companie you want on that list.
There’s no list of dealers on that site? Only to sign up as a dealer. Where abouts do you find that list of dealers?
Link please
Your reluctance to name bad manufacturers perplexes me. They deserve it. On the flip side, when you do call one out, you need to present pretty solid facts and consumer experiences. I agree that certain manufacturers and models need to be called out. Many maybe. I believe you can provide a valuable service to RV buyers, new buyers or seasoned, as long as you can substantiate your claims. As for your new website, you better have reliable criteria by which you rate and evaluate dealers or your effort becomes suspect, possibly unreliable and useless. I understand your motive and love the intent, but you need to be careful in your existing relationships so as to not raise the specter of favoritism, and the evaluation metrics you use to evaluate dealers must be widely accepted by your audience (potential buyers I assume) and relevant (if that makes sense). Good luck.
People don’t realize just how bad things are gonna get in the next 12-18 months. Any disposable income/monies on hand should be spent/saved on preparing for sky high energy prices, food/medicine shortages, etc…your better off renting an RV than being in hock up to your ass.
Manufacturers have not laid off employees and need to. Way too many units are being built.
Hope you get a few names for Canada, Great work Wingman!
One great dealer is taylorcoach.
We ordered a 14 foot they building it right in he’s back yard
Thanks for the great info. Most dealers with whom I speak these days still threaten they will only service customers to whom they sell a rig. Wish your RV network would expand out to the west coast!
FR not FW
Any dealers in Florida you recommend? Also am thinking about a east to west 2700ns a FW product?
The reputation of RV dealers needs all the help it can get! Words of wisdom, (speaking from purchasing experience) Stay far far away from General RV and Camping world! They will screw you and tattoo you without blinking an eye!!!
Thanks, Allen. 👍🏼
