“After many years of going to Bosque del Apache to photograph the winter migrating birds, I decided to concentrate on the unusually large number of snow geese, which were around 40,000 this particular year,” explains Connel. “I wanted an image that conveyed the huge concentration of birds. The hard part is filling the frame but also being able to distinguish the individual birds. The other trick is determining the direction they’ll take off based on the wind direction and pre-positioning yourself to capture the optimal flight angle where the birds are flying slightly towards the camera instead of away.”
