I wanted to learn how to set up our travel trailer, the Little Guy Max, when we arrived at our campsite so I could do it myself. As my husband, Tom was teaching me how, and sharing setup tips, I created a step-by-step travel trailer setup checklist that I rely on so I do not miss an important step. It makes the process really easy. And you should have a checklist too.

  • Hello Randi from New Hampshire! Great tips! I really like The LGM. We initially chose a smaller teardrop that our Tacoma could pull. If we decided to buy a LGM, I see you have a jeep in this video, but I think you had a 4×4 Tundra in an older video. What else will easily tow LGM? I would like an affordable SUV that has the electric brake package factory installed. That would be easier for us. Keep filming these tips and happy camping! ~ Diane

  • Why was I thinking that I would actually get a checklist if I clicked through all this? Am I wrong that there is nothing else?

  • Thanks, Randi! I have almost the same equipment as you except I have a manual tongue Jack. I would love to eventually get a power one installed, but I have only had my trailer for a year and have spent a lot of money already! Oh well 😎

  • We got the same hitch with year and love it…. We got it so I could help, and or hitch up myself ❤️❤️❤️

  • I got a chuckle out of you with your drill. you look dangerous. I've been using checklist for years . Rest areas especially, if I'm going to mess up it pulling out of the rest area leaving stairs down etc. I'm guessing you camp alone at times. I do too. I purchased an I-Ball camera for hitching up. Saves me a lot of aggravation. Just thought I'd pass it along.

  • Another must-do: Before plugging in, make sure you turn OFF the pole breaker, then plug in a surge protector, turn ON the breaker and let the surge protector confirm all is well at the post BEFORE you turn of the breaker, again, plug your RV into the surge protector and then turn the breaker back on. This’ll save you lots of money in the event the post wiring is faulty or there are damaging campground power surges.

  • All great tips thanks for your info. A helpful hint on leveling add a ruler 📏 with the level to see how much you need to come up

  • Comment two! LOL. I use the manual stabilizer to break them free before I use the drill. Reduces torque and save wear and tear on the drill! But, otherwise, this is pretty much my checklist.

  • Just a note: When you disconnect the power from the tow vehicle, you should never pull it by the cord; always use the molded plug. You will eventually damage the connection otherwise.

  • Randi, have you ever checked fuel mileage with the new tow vehicle?

  • Depending on the angle of the tow vehicle to the trailer (it's not always fairly flat as shown in the video), it may be more difficult to get the trailer to come off the hitch ball. To that end, I like to grease the hitch ball with wheel bearing grease (cleans up easily with a paper towel after disconnecting). This allows it to slip off more easily at varying angles. Sometimes, it's necessary to stand on the hitch ball mount itself to apply some more downward force to get the trailer off the ball. Another handy device for leveling is the LevelMate Pro (or similar) and the corresponding phone app.
