  • Not the way I'd recommend hooking up, but to each their own. Lot of points not mentioned though. Having driven Class 8 trucks a LONG time, I'd recommend to always have 'some load' transmitted through your trailer, so that when you are 'backing up', you are also loading the truck. To do this, you need to have your fifth wheel hitch of the trailer about 1-inch lower than your bed plate…so you are 'lifting the trailer' as you back under it. If you connect your wiring harness prior to doing this, you then can use your trolley brake to hold the trailer still, as you do this. THIS IS THE ONLY WAY that you should EVER hook up to a tractor-trailer…and it works excellent with an RV, too!
As for the tailgate, it really depends on the bed you have…if you are driving a long-bed (8-ft) you will have to drop your tailgate (or change to a 'V' gate aftermarket tailgate) to get the hitch 'inside the bed', then 'close' your tailgate before backing into your hitch (unless you want to damage your forward basement door). With a 6-ft shortbed, you may or may not have to do this (I've had trucks where I did have to, and where I did not have to do this)…but if your bed and hitch are positioned to where you have to close the tailgate prior to 'final connection', good luck! It is a NIGHTMARE to close a 6-ft bed's tailgate prior to backing in (especially if you have an extended 12" or longer pin box on your trailer)…I HIGHLY recommend spending the extra $500 and getting a 'V' tailgate that has the relief for the fifth wheel hitch, so you can simply leave your tailgate up and back in to your hitch…it's like not having a tailgate at all!!!

  • Don't leave your break away cable and electrical hookup in the bed and pull out . If it gets hooked or snagged on something you'll have to repair it.

  • Open the tailgate FIRST! Otherwise you may get out of your routine and rip it off when you disconnect. Also, beware of split-jaw type hitches! Get one that wraps around the pin or has a bar that slides completely behind the pin, or you may experience a disaster know to many Reese owners who have had (unpublisized) failures with their split-jaw hitches…very very bad design!

  • I would definitely recommend a tug test after hooking up that definitely should have been mentioned in the video.

  • I wish I went to you folks to buy my 5th wheel. the rv dealer I went to did nothing to help me match my truck to the 5th wheel weight I could safely haul. as a result I bout a 5th wheel that was to heavy for my f150. so I had to go and buy a new truck now I have more then enough truck to handle my 10600 lb 5th wheel. that was a terrible experience new buyers beware and don't make the mistake I did get enough trk to handle the load. thanks
